The Opportunity 

  • Location: Durham, NC (Hybrid, minimum 3 days/week on-site) 
  • Duration: 12 weeks (Start Dates: May 17 or June 21) 
  • Pay Range: USD $27.00 – USD $37.00 per hour 

Spend your summer working on real infrastructure problems at scale. As a Customer Systems Reliability Engineer (SRE) Intern, you will work directly on distributed systems, virtualization layers, and high-availability cloud platforms alongside senior systems architects, Linux kernel specialists, and virtualization engineers. This hands-on internship will include working on real, live technical cases with mentor support. You’ll develop foundational skills in technical problem-solving, root-cause analysis, complex systems diagnosis, and infrastructure management. You’ll work alongside seasoned experts—from Linux specialists to virtualization gurus—who are dedicated to mentoring you and helping you turn classroom theory into industry-leading technology. 

This role is ideal for candidates with a knack for untangling complex technical puzzles and who also love to support a global customer base. In fact, our Worldwide Support team consistently leads the IT industry, maintaining an incredible 90+ Net Promoter Score (NPS) for over 11 years

About the Team  

The Systems Reliability Engineering team is responsible for ensuring the high availability, resiliency, and performance of enterprise cloud platforms across global deployments. Based in Durham, NC, the team operates in a hybrid work environment (minimum 3 days per week on-site). We partner closely with core R&D teams and external technology partners to isolate complex platform bugs, build diagnostic tooling, and feed field learnings back into product development. 

Your Role 

  • Customer-Centric Engineering: Work with enterprise customers to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, directly influencing the loyalty and success of our growing user base. 
  • Collaborative Problem Solving: Partner with Engineering and technology partners (like Lenovo, HPE, and VMware) to resolve systemic issues and propose product enhancements based on field feedback. 
  • Impactful Change: Influence the Nutanix platform by providing feedback to core Engineering teams, ensuring our products continue to delight our customers. 

What You Will Bring 

  • Education: Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program (Associates or Bachelors) at an accredited college or university in Information Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, System Administration, or a related technical program. 
  • Including: An anticipated graduation date between December 2027 and August 2028. 
  • Customer Experience: Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service, communicating clearly with customers or stakeholders, and approaching technical questions with empathy, curiosity, and a solutions-oriented mindset. 
  • Working familiarity with Linux/Unix operating system fundamentals, TCP/IP networking, hypervisors (KVM, ESXi), or distributed storage concepts. 
  • Strong analytical troubleshooting skills, logical reasoning, and curiosity regarding how hardware and software interact under operational conditions.

  • Logistics: Ability to work from our Durham, NC offices a minimum of 3 days per week (Hybrid model). Please note that Nutanix does not provide housing or relocation assistance for this program.

The Interview Process

3. Virtual Interview Day: Students who advance to this round will receive preparation prior to the interviews. Expect up to 3 interviews with Nutanix engineers and leaders. These are designed to assess your technical skills, role readiness, and your motivation for the opportunity at Nutanix. Each meeting will offer you an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the team you'll potentially work with. 

4. The Finish Line: We aim to extend final offers by mid-November. 

Pay Transparency  

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between USD $27.00 and USD $37.00 per hour. 

However, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. 

If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors. Work Arrangement  

This role operates in a hybrid capacity, blending the benefits of remote work with the advantages of in-person collaboration. In locations where our workplace policy applies (i.e. San Jose, Durham, Mexico City, Vancouver, Bangalore, Pune, Hoofddorp, Belgrade, Barcelona, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo), employees are expected to work onsite a minimum of 3 days per week to foster collaboration, team alignment, and access to in-office resources.
