Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a diverse, exciting, and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. The Observatory operates a variety of radio telescopes that span the globe, including the famous Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.
 
At NRAO we are seeking a Part-Time Shipping and Receiving Clerk. The position will be based at our office in Socorro and will drive to the Very Large Array site, 50 miles west of Socorro regularly. The Shipping and Receiving Clerk will verify and keep records on incoming and outgoing shipments as well as prepare items for shipment. Duties include assembling, addressing, stamping, and shipping merchandise or material; receiving, unpacking, verifying and recording incoming merchandise or material; and arranging for the transportation of products. Log in   systems and distribute inbound freight by matching packing slips with Purchase Receivers. Ensures that materials shipped and received are verified against pertinent documentation such as bills of lading, purchase orders, and invoices.  Performs daily mail run and routes to ensure accurate and prompt delivery to departments and facilities.

 

What You Will be Doing:

         Examining contents and compare with records, such as manifests, invoices, or orders, to verify accuracy of incoming or outgoing shipment.

        Preparing documents, such as work orders, bills of lading, and shipping orders to route materials.

        Recording shipment data, such as weight, charges, space availability, and damages and discrepancies, for reporting, accounting, and recordkeeping purposes.

        Determining shipping method for materials, using knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.

         Packing, sealing, labeling, and affixing postage to prepare materials for shipping, using work devices such as hand tools, power tools, and postage meter.

        Operating hand dollies, pallet jacks, and/or forklifts in loading and unloading supplies and equipment;

         Operating company vehicle to deliver shipments; 

        Assisting in routine maintenance of equipment, relocation of incoming and outgoing materials. 

        Maintaining department spreadsheets, prepare routine reports, and file shipping/receiving records.

        Conferring and corresponding with establishment representatives to rectify problems, such as damages, shortages, and non-conformance to specifications.

        Requisitioning and storing shipping materials and supplies to maintain inventory of stock.

        Contacting carrier representatives to make arrangements and to issue instructions for shipping and delivery of materials.

        Computing amounts, such as space available, and shipping, storage, and demurrage charges, using calculator or price list.

        Filling in for/backs up the Inventory & Supply Clerk and Special Services Assistant, as necessary.

        Proactively complying with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work areas.

        Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

The VLA Site is a remote scientific/industrial facility at 7000 feet elevation. This position is located at DSOC where the shipping and receiving dock and office is located. Works in office environment, must be able to work at a computer with detailed and complex alpha and numerical information. Works in a warehouse or stores environment and at a desk with a computer terminal. Position is responsible for delivering parcels and packages to the three floors of DSOC and the VLA are required.  May work outdoors delivering/driving supplies to per-determined locations. Frequent standing, walking, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.

Who You Are:

 

        You have a high school diploma or GED.

        You have at least two years of experience in related field. – OR – An equivalent combination of education and experience.

        Must have a valid driver’s license

        Background Check. The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment motor vehicle background check as a condition of employment.
