Within this area, Student Equity & Retention leads initiatives that promote a more diverse student population, with a focus on supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds to access and succeed in university study.

About the role

The Retention Coordinator develops and improves initiatives that identify and engage students at risk of not completing their studies or leaving the University. Working with stakeholders across the University, the position involves analysing student engagement data, developing targeted interventions, and contributing to the monitoring, reporting, and evaluation of retention activities. The position reports to the Manager, Student Equity and Retention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of retention strategies aligned with the University’s Student Retention & Success Framework and strategic objectives.
  • Analyse student engagement, performance, and demographic data to identify attrition trends and inform targeted interventions.
  • Develop risk indicators and design retention initiatives such as early alerts, communication campaigns, and student success plans.
  • Lead the embedding of retention initiatives within core university systems (e.g. CRM, LMS, Student Portal) to support effective student engagement and interventions.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to deliver initiatives that connect students with appropriate support services across the student lifecycle.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on retention initiatives, supporting continuous improvement and compliance with relevant policies and frameworks.

Qualifications, skills & experience

  • Degree qualification with substantial relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience - data analytics or applied social sciences highly favourable.
  • Experience designing and implementing evidence-based, data-informed student retention or engagement initiatives.
  • Strong analytical skills, data literacy, and the ability to present insights clearly.
  • Knowledge of the Australian tertiary education system and factors affecting student retention, engagement, and success is desirable.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, independently and in teams.
  • Demonstrated initiative and commitment to continuous quality improvement, ensuring high-quality outcomes and a positive student or stakeholder experience.
  • Ability to work respectfully and sensitively with people from diverse backgrounds, including CALD communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
