About the office
Pathways delivers high-quality enabling programs with the aim of preparing students for university study. Regardless of their chosen undergraduate discipline, our enabling programs provide essential skills to transition to university study including academic writing, research and information literacy, career awareness, navigational skills, maths and human biology.
About the role
Pathways seek expressions of interest from experienced Academics who have a passion for teaching those new to university. Teaching opportunities are available on a sessional basis across the Tertiary Pathway Program (for school leaver and mature age students) and UniPath (for Year 11 and 12 students). Semester and block teaching opportunities are available.
We are looking for sessional academic staff members with subject matter expertise in enabling education, including one or more of the following areas:
- Academic literacy and communication skills
- Research and academic writing
- Human biology
- Mathematics
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct tutorials/lectures to an excellent standard, which includes preparing
- lesson plans and facilitating informed group discussions and activities to enhance student engagement.
- Consultation with students in relation to weekly topics, readings, and upcoming
- assessments.
- Assisting with assessment administration, such as marking, entering results and providing feedback to students as required.
- Attend meetings as required by the Course Coordinator/Program Coordinator.
- Completion of relevant required induction/professional development through the university.
- Identify and engage students at risk of course failure or non-completion
- following agreed processes and ensure appropriate supports are put in place.
Qualifications, skills & experience
- Supportive of the Objects of Notre Dame as a Catholic University.
- A minimum of an undergraduate qualification (possession or progress toward
- Honours, Masters or PhD desirable) and/or equivalent professional experience.
- Prior teaching experience at the tertiary level with sound understanding of core academic skills required for successful university study, enabling pedagogy and/or adult learning principles.
- Experience in or awareness of secondary teaching will be an asset to those interested in teaching UniPath.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to foster high levels of collegiality and ability to empathise with students.
- Ability to deliver quality learning and teaching practices in multiple modes.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with individuals from diverse
- backgrounds.
- Ability to, or a willingness to learn how to incorporate technology into teaching and learning.
- Proven ability to assess priority of tasks, manage workload and meet deadlines, in a busy education environment.
