The Indigenous Education and Student Support Office, positioned within the Enabling Directorate, is committed to promoting the academic success and well-being of First Nations students across all campuses.

Special Requirements

This position is a genuine occupational qualification, under s14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977(NSW) /s 28 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic)and is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people only.

To be eligible for this position, you must provide a statement and supporting documentation that addresses how you meet each of the following criteria for Aboriginality:

i. be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and

ii. identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and

iii. be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.

 

The University may request further information from applicants as required. Supporting documentation may include, but is not limited to, a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council.

About the role

Enhance the Indigenous student experience across all academic programs through close collaboration with academic and professional staff within Schools and central services. This partnership ensures the timely and effective delivery of support services that contribute to improved student retention and successful graduation outcomes. The position reports to the Team Leader, Indigenous Education and Student Support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support new student initiatives that help Indigenous students stay engaged and succeed.
  • Respond to student questions and provide helpful advice and information.
  • Provide day-to-day administrative support for the Indigenous Student Support Office, including organising meetings, preparing documents, correspondence, presentations and reports.
  • Build positive relationships with external partners, students and internal stakeholders to support Indigenous student participation and success.
  • Connect Indigenous students with academic and support programs to help them achieve their educational goals.
  • Support students through mentoring, community engagement, career development and eligibility assessments for scholarships, grants and tutorial and other support services.

Qualifications, skills & experience

  • Certificate IV with relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience working with, or supporting, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities or initiatives. (desirable).
  • Understanding of the issues and challenges that may affect Indigenous students in higher education.
  • Respect for the diverse needs, cultures and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team in a changing environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
