About the role
Reporting to the Faculty Laboratory Manager, this role manages the infrastructure for laboratory facilities across the School of Health Sciences, including sites in both New South Wales and Western Australia. The Laboratory Technician will coordinate the operations and management of activities within all laboratories within the School of Health Sciences, including simulation laboratories.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordination and responsibility for high quality research laboratories, simulated environments, gymnasium and other discipline specific laboratories that encompasses all relevant undergraduate and post graduate teaching and research within the School of Health Sciences.
- Manage purchasing of laboratory and facilities goods and services, ensuring they are ordered, received and processed promptly and efficiently, involving daily use of relevant University financial systems.
- Managing the School of Health Sciences technical team staffing across the laboratory spaces nationally, including casual / sessional staffing, in line with timetable requirements and provide technical support to students.
- Managing the laboratory timetables, in consultation with the School of Health Sciences administration and relevant academic staff.
- Manage the receipt, storage and processing of bio-specimens from School of Health Sciences staff and external collaborators.
- Contribute to research administration relevant to School of Health Sciences projects, including internal and external reporting
- Ensure all School of Health Sciences laboratories comply with the University of Notre Dame Australia’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing requirements in developing, implementing and documenting safety policies and procedures in conjunction with the Safety and Wellbeing team.
- Act as the first point of contact for all School of Health Sciences laboratory users with regard to safety issues.
- Attend regular meetings with Faculty and School staff and provide advice on technical, operational, compliance, research and development matters.
- Work to build and maintain effective professional partnerships with peers and stakeholders in a cooperative and collegial manner.
- Work closely with School and Faculty research groups on the design and implementation of projects, especially sample collection, storage, processing and assays.
- Advise Faculty and School management on new equipment, assays and procedures.
- Assist in preparation of equipment grant applications for specialist equipment.
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for the School of Health Sciences laboratories.
- Coordinate the induction of new staff, students and contractors into the School of Health Sciences laboratories.
- Comply with all other reasonable training and duties as identified by the line manager (or delegate).
- Comply with University policies and procedures in all aspects of their work and conduct.
Qualifications, skills & experience
- Postgraduate qualifications in a science related discipline or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience, or extensive experience and management expertise, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training including a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in the management and use of a diverse portfolio of laboratory environments.
- Extensive and relevant experience in managing the range of laboratory types within the School of Health Sciences and in leading and managing multidisciplinary technical support teams.
- Experience in a higher education environment would be highly regarded.
- Knowledge and understanding of Australian Standards AS/NZS:2243.3:2010 Safety in Laboratories, and occupational safety and health principles and practices as they would apply to a laboratory setting where chemicals, biological materials and radioactive materials and irradiating equipment are utilised.
- Demonstrate leadership and people management experience with the ability to promote collaboration and teamwork and foster a positive culture and work environment.
- Experience working with high fidelity simulation and expertise in innovative technologies related to health professions.
- Demonstrated flexibility in order to work across different discipline areas.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience with exposure to microbiological safety and containment and biological sample storage.
- Demonstrated high level analytical and problem solving abilities.
- High level organisation skills including the ability to self-manage and prioritise, coupled with a demonstrable ability to supervise others.
- Demonstrable ability to work both independently and as a member of a team in a cooperative and collegial manner.
- Demonstrable ability to consistently produce high quality results, to prioritize workloads and to meet key goals and important deadlines.
- Sound knowledge of quality processes and Work Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated ability to interact at all levels within an organisation.
- Excellent written and oral communication.
- Strong computing skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, databases and spreadsheets, and in laboratory information management systems.
