About the role
Reporting to the Head of Clinical Years, you will provide academic leadership within the National School of Medicine, Fremantle campus, to ensure excellence in teaching in the field of psychiatry. You will work in collaboration with the National Head of Medical Education and Innovation and National Head of Assessment to support curriculum and assessment design, to promote high quality student Additionally you will strengthen partnerships with health services and professional bodies to enhance the School’s reputation in medical education.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide academic leadership in the discipline of Psychiatry in the School.
- Coordinate the development and revision, delivery and assessment of the Psychiatry curriculum in the Fremantle MD program in 2026 working towards a National MD program by 2027 onwards.
- Deliver high quality teaching to ensure a high level of student satisfaction and appropriate skill development for clinical practice.
- Maintain, and recruit as necessary clinical placements and teachers in Psychiatry including examiners for OSCEs.
- Provide pastoral care to medical students in the Psychiatry rotation.
- Ensure continued expertise within Psychiatry and current clinical practice, by maintaining a clinical based practice 2 sessions a week.
Qualifications, skills & experience
You will be expected to maintain a record of excellent in teaching in a department, school, faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. You will be expected to play a leadership role in the promotion of major digital enhancements to pedagogical practices and professional activities. You will have advanced qualifications and recognised significant experience in the relevant discipline area. This position will normally require a doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard will be had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or technical achievement. In addition you will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professonal achievement in the relevant discipline area. This includes having authority to commit resources in line with the Operational Delegations of Authority.
- A medical qualification registered/registrable with the Medical Board of Australia in Western Australia.
- A fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
- Clinically active as a Psychiatrist at a clinical site that takes our students on placement, or willing to facilitate new placements at their clinical site.
- Experience working as a clinical teacher and mentor in psychiatry with either or both medical students and/ or junior doctors.
- Demonstrated experience in medical education and teaching.
- High level interpersonal skills included demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with a diverse range of people.
- Advanced knowledge of medical education
- Excellent proven organisational and management skills as well as problem solving and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated pastoral care of students.
