About the School/ Office

The School of Nursing Midwifery & Health Sciences offers an extensive range of quality accredited undergraduate, postgraduate programs and professional development courses that are designed to provide opportunities for the student to engage in the classroom through professional workplace experiences. Our School is distinctive for its teaching culture, delivery of quality contemporary education and its pastoral care mission. We are able to do this through the dynamic learning experiences made possible by the teaching staff, the collaborative and strong external partnerships with industry and engagement with alumni and the community. All of our courses are delivered by experienced clinicians and academics ensuring materials and content are evidence based, contemporary and future focused.

About the role/ Position Purpose

The School is seeking expressions of interest from AHPRA Registered Nurse/ Midwife Division 1 – unrestricted, with a minimum 3 years post registration experience and a passion for teaching/ mentoring. Clinical Facilitator opportunities are available on a sessional basis during nursing practicum periods May to June and October to February each yearThis role reports to the Professional Practice Coordinator, NMHSP.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Facilitate formal and informal learning opportunities for the student to meet theoretical and professional practice objectives and course learning outcomes in the clinical setting
  2. Demonstrate clinical expertise and professional role modelling.
  3. Support the student in development of critical thinking skills and evidence based clinical practice.
  4. Assist students to develop skills in reflection and self-evaluation.
  5. Facilitate students to meet the Registered nurse standards for practice.
  6. Maintain and promote the standards and policies of the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the health care provider.
  7. Attend and participate in scheduled clinical facilitator clinical debrief meetings, education sessions and continuing education programs offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
  8. Liaise with health facility staff to provide opportunities for the students to achieve personal and course learning outcomes.
  9. Monitor and evaluate student performance throughout placement, using the School of Nursing and Midwifery professional practice assessment tools and learning objectives.
  10. Provide prompt and constructive feedback about student performance to student and University Course Coordinator, as required.
  11. Respond promptly and professionally to concerns and needs of students and staff in the health care facility
  12. Be physically present at the placement site by agreement of the education provider and health facility.

Selection Criteria


  1. Supportive of the Objects of Notre Dame as a Catholic University
  2. Minimum 3 years post registration experience.
  3. Experience in clinical education/teaching of undergraduate nursing students, or other relevant teaching experience.
  4. Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  5. Knowledge of Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse standards for practice, Codes of Conduct and ICN Ethical Standards relevant to the students’ discipline (ie Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife, Mental Health Nurse).
  6. Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures for nursing practice.


  1. Current AHPRA Registered Nurse/Midwife Division 1 – unrestricted.
  2. Bachelor degree in Nursing.
  3. Willingness to undertake post graduate studies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to work effectively in a team.
  2. Ability to assess priority of tasks, manage workload and meet deadlines in a busy education environment.
  3. Evidence of a high level of pastoral care to students.
