Engineering Manager - Test and Development

their needs. We are looking for a successful and passionate Engineering Manager of Test and Development to join our growing team.


To manage the test and development department at Northern Tool + Equipment and be responsible for product development projects, warranty, and quality of our product portfolio. This includes setting expectations for all processes, documentation, and activities for product validation. Responsibilities will include department oversight, strategic planning feedback, department budgeting, and resource management. This position will also be responsible for operation, construction and/or requisition of test stands as it pertains to specific projects. This position will be responsible for implementing change to support decreasing time required for product development testing required, effective DVPR planning, and issue tracking.


1. Leads a team of test engineers and technicians to ensure thorough platform testing and validation of the product portfolio.

2. Manages test development team including coaching and mentoring, hiring, performance management and development.

3. Owns organizing, planning, executing, and reporting of DVPR.

4. Designs experiment development and execution (DOE).

5. Conducts reliability testing (i.e. R90 C90).

6. Develops a strong culture of customer support, rapid response, and continuous learning.

7. Ensures direct interaction of the engineering team with customers, partners, and internal, departments, to deeply understand customer needs.

8. Participates in all major toll gate reviews with senior management.

9. Manages strategic partnership for external testing capability.

10. Sets strategic vision for lab capabilities and capacity.

11. Establishes test request, reporting, and test methodology standards for DVPR.

12. Provides on-going support for test department enhancements as needed to ensure high quality and capable product categories and brands.

13. Supports DFMEA and DRBFM discussions.

14. Participates in design reviews.

15. Thinks critically around product requirements and validation.

16. Keeps a clean and safe work environment and complies with OSHA standards.

17. Supports project teams with specification development for subsystems.

18. Supports project teams with product development toll gate communication.

19. Keeps supervisor informed of important developments, potential problems and related information necessary for effective management. Coordinates and communicates plans and activities with others as appropriate to ensure a coordinated work effort and team approach.

20. Performs other duties as apparent or assigned.

· Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field required.

· At least five years of experience in product testing and test lab operations.

· At least five years’ experience in product development.

· Strong attention to detail.

· Strong documentation skills.
