Located in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, our head office is easily accessible by TTC and GO Transit, and within walking distance to the Eaton Centre and CN Tower. As a national property and casualty commercial insurance provider, we also have offices across Canada.

Position Summary 

The Director, Corporate Underwriting - will proactively look for ways to drive the profitable growth of commercial property related product lines. The incumbent is responsible for acting as the technical referral point to NBFC’s operational profit centres for mid to large size accounts.  The director will also provide technical guidance and training to direct reports and to various cross functional departments including actuarial, claims and risk management

What you will be doing:


  • Act as the NBFC subject matter expert for property related lines including Property, business interruption, equipment breakdown, inland marine, marine and crime coverages.
  • Act as the technical referral point to NBFC profit centres for accounts that fall outside the authority level of NBFC profit centres.
  • Monitor trends and developments and identify areas of concern regarding losses, loss ratios, risk trends, audit and coaching review results or other discrepancies within NBFC profit centres.
  • Ensure the maintenance and development of underwriting guidelines, procedures, and manuals.
  • Continuously develop and communicate underwriting insights to enhance the overall quality of underwriting within the NBFC profit centres.
  • Aid the audit team by providing underwriting support during NBFC profit centre audits
  • Collaborate with the corporate process team to develop tools and processes to enhance underwriting efficiency.
  • Participate in market research and analysis, and aid in the development of business cases for proposed new products or product lines changes or enhancements.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and lead the development of new property related products or product lines changes or enhancements.
  • Fully understand and support corporate financial and underwriting goals and objectives and ensure all direct reports are knowledgeable as to these goals and objectives.
  • Maintain and expand knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes through the participation in industry associations and training opportunities.

Customer Service:

  • Foster positive relationships with the various NBFC profit centres by providing a timely and solution-oriented approach to account referrals.
  • Work collaboratively to support the initiatives of cross functional departments including audit and training, claims, actuarial, reinsurance, IT, BI and process.


  • Act as a resource on risks outside of the authority level for less experienced underwriters, and authorize risks within own established authority levels.
  • Provide effective daily leadership, coaching and motivation of staff to ensure service and quality objectives are met.

Operational Leadership:

  • Direct research and analysis of the market and work with NBFC industry sector committees, the customer innovation team and NBFC profit centres to provide product development ideas.
  • Maintain a complete knowledge of corporate and regional underwriting results, and ensure these are properly communicated to all direct reports.
  • Oversee the analysis of the effect of relevant legislation on policy coverages, and recommend changes and additions to policy wordings.
  • Direct and approve the development and updating of policy wordings and forms.


  • Responsible for resource and workload planning and organization
  • Responsible for driving the completion of assigned projects within the corporate underwriting team
  • Complete annual performance objective planning for direct reports


  • Work collaboratively on special projects and assignments when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • Post-secondary school education and/or equivalent on the job experience.
  • Completion of the CIP and/or FCIP designation.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in commercial property and casualty insurance including mid-market to large business.
  • Minimum 5 years leadership experience.
  • Strong relationships with local brokers and well respected within the broker community.
  • Working knowledge of company underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information, statuary constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
  • Ability to work within and adapt to PC oriented environments, including familiarity with e-mail and Internet skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Fluently bilingual (English / French) is an asset
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of underwriting discipline and pricing models.
  • Working knowledge of other functional areas (i.e. Claims, Risk Management, Premium Accounting, etc.)
