Located in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, our head office is easily accessible by TTC and GO Transit, and within walking distance to the Eaton Centre, Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre, and CN Tower. As a national property and casualty commercial insurance provider, we also have offices across Canada.

Position Summary 

This position is responsible for the management and direction of the commodity tax function. Ensures unit(s) adherence to company and group policies, procedures, and guidelines, and assists in the development/ implementation of operational workflow, systems, and controls.

What you will be doing:

  1. Coordinate and direct commodity tax reporting and analysis within the unit.
  • Monitor/ensure the effective operation of commodity tax function by coordinating and enhancing workflow/operational procedures and implementing changes/modifications where necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with all provincial and federal commodity tax legislation and regulations and ensure that all returns are filed in a timely manner.
  • Manage the federal and provincial commodity tax audits to ensure auditors are given any necessary information and documents and present the company’s position in a complete and accurate manner.
  • Organize and recommend new systems and system enhancements/changes to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of all commodity tax accounting and financial records, reports, and transactions.
  1. Develop strategies and plans to take advantage of the tax saving strategies available to the company.
  2. Professional development and mentorship.
  • Initiate and execute a variety of special projects/assignments/task forces and assist with special assignments and taskforces assigned to the unit.
  • Provide other members of Finance who assist with tax work, with technical guidance and assistance, support, and coaching as required.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends/developments and regulatory changes in order to ensure continued state-of-the-art accounting systems and controls and develop new techniques and perform assignments of increasing complexity.

  • Ability to understand and follow job-related instructional guides (procedure /policy manuals, catalogs).
  • Mathematical aptitude for premium calculations, ratings, formulae, percentages, etc.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high standards of performance and goals.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills to foster teamwork and collaboration, motivate and support Finance colleagues, and respond to customer and internal business parties.
  • Ability to foster and build effective working relationships with both internal and external business contacts.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional and technical development.

What sets you apart:

  • 5-7 years of experience in commodity taxation in financial services, and accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance accounting, including premiums, claims, statutory overdues, collections, reinsurance, loss accounting, controls, and accounting systems.
  • Working knowledge of insurance trends, developments, current standards, and federal, provincial, and local laws and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet software (i.e. Excel); Working knowledge of accounting/insurance related systems (i.e. PMS, ADS, Oasis, Direct Bill).
  • Post-secondary education in a financial discipline or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Attained CPA accounting designation.
