Located in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, our head office is easily accessible by TTC and GO Transit, and within walking distance to the Eaton Centre, Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre, and CN Tower. Position Summary 

The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely production of internal and external financial reports and for performing various insurance, reinsurance and general accounting reconciliations and related journal entries.

What you will be doing:

  1. Prepare financial reports used in regulatory filings.
  • Administer internal accounting systems, and prepare financial information and reports (i.e. monthly, quarterly, yearly and/or ad-hoc) for the department, management and/or regulatory authorities.
  • Prepare regulatory filings and analyses.
  • Provide accurate information to Actuary for reserve reporting.
  • Understand and compile statistical reporting (i.e. underwriting).
  • Maintain and recommend improvements to reporting and internal control procedures

 

  1. Compile, analyze, and reconcile financial accounts and records, and identify and resolve discrepancies or problems and/or recommend solutions.
  • Ensure all accounting entries are entered accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assist with the development of appropriate action plans for the resolution of discrepancies and potential problems.
  • Coordinate with other units/departments to ensure financial data and systems are updated in a timely manner and to improve productivity and customer service.
  • Reconcile Losses Payable accounts

 

  1. Build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external business contacts and act as a resource regarding financial or business issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to other staff members.
  • Understand and apply best business practices towards compliance, internal control, and operational risk controls in accordance with company or regulatory standards and policies.

 

  1. Other duties as assigned.

 

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of accounting/financial analyst experience or other related discipline, preferably within the insurance industry.
  • Post-secondary education in a financial discipline or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Good knowledge of insurance accounting, including premiums, claims, reinsurance, and loss accounting.
  • Knowledge of insurance trends, developments, current standards, and federal, provincial, and local laws and regulations.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet software (i.e. Excel); PC and Mainframe experience. Working knowledge of Excel Macros would be an asset.
  • Good knowledge of Accounting/Insurance Systems.
