Located in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, our head office is easily accessible by TTC and GO Transit, and within walking distance to the Eaton Centre and CN Tower. As a national property and casualty commercial insurance provider, we also have offices across Canada.

Position Summary 

Responsible for overseeing the management, direction, and control of claims operations for the region.  Ensures a prompt, efficient, courteous, equitable, and cost-effective claims service to all clients through proper investigation, reserving, and resolution.  Directs claims litigation through the evaluation of defense strategies and the management of litigation

What you will be doing:

  • Responsible to provide visible and effective leadership ensuring that the corporate strategy, Business Plan objectives, initiatives and priorities are implemented and clearly communicated to all within the functional area
  • Set, communicate and monitor standards of performance for individual positions and the department
  • Direct the resolution and disposition of claims through investigation/analysis/evaluation of case facts, determination, establishment and maintenance of appropriate case reserves, effective control of payments, negotiation, appropriateness of settlement or declination, management of recovery programs, and effective internal security measures
  • Direct the reserving and disposition of large and complex claims and collaborate on disputed claims coverage issues to ensure that insuring clauses are correctly interpreted
  • Oversee negotiations and settlements with the objective of achieving fair and reasonable dispositions of large losses
  • Oversee the direction and management of the activities of the outside counsel and relevant experts, and oversee, evaluate, and control defense strategies, and litigation activities
  • Direct development, implementation and monitoring of policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines to ensure the professional, efficient, equitable, and cost-effective disposition of claims
  • Direct the development and conduct claims audit reviews in order to ensure consistency, product quality, superior service, and adherence to corporate guidelines
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and liaison with Underwriting, Marketing, Risk Services, Legal, Actuarial and any other departments to facilitate claims resolution
  • Maintain contact and amicable relations with brokers to ensure good communication
  • Represent the company externally through various contacts (including independent adjusters, various insurance adjusting companies, brokers and lawyers across the country, engineers, doctors, and accountants, through the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the Insurance Crime Prevention Bureau, and the Claim Managers Association)
  • Act as a resource on issues of law and liability with the objective of achieving fairness in settlement amounts
  • Select and communicate list of the best qualified outside counsel for retention and consultation on cases not handled by in-house counsel
  • Ensure the timely creation and maintenance of adequate reserves (accountable for reserve adequacy on all claims, and for bulk reserves for allocated and unallocated loss adjustment expenses and I.B.N.R)
  • Direct development and implementation of highly automated claims systems for efficient and cost-effective delivery of the end product
  • Responsible for budget preparation and adherence to the budget annually.
  • Report to senior management on loss developments, including CAT losses
  • Direct management of subrogation and salvage activities to maximize the recovery of paid claims and the return on salvage property
  • Identify training opportunities and minimize the potential for leakage as a result of the file review process.

What we are looking for:

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience at a Director and/or senior management level with proven results
  • Minimum of 15 years of claims experience with a demonstrated track record of accomplishments in the insurance industry
  • Significant years of claims handling experience including experience in the investigation of complex commercial auto, property or liability claims
  • Thorough knowledge of insurance products, contract language and claims practices
  • Demonstrated proficiency of the principles and practices related to claims settlement.
  • Thorough knowledge of reporting requirements, including fraud investigation, serious losses and coverage questions. Working knowledge of claims management and automated estimating systems
  • Working knowledge of federal, provincial, and local statutes
  • CIP designation; FCIP an asset
