Located in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, our head office is easily accessible by TTC and GO Transit, and within walking distance to the Eaton Centre, Scotiabank Arena, Rogers Centre, and CN Tower. Position Summary 

The Claims Appraiser is responsible for reviewing and estimating the value of routine physical damage claims in an efficient and timely manner in order to arrive at an equitable settlement figure which is acceptable to all parties involved.

What you will be doing:

  • Investigate, evaluate, and appraise physical damages losses in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with corporate guidelines.
    • Review images and estimates on physical damage claims in order to arrive at a monetary value for the damage and repair cost.
    • Contact repair facilities to confirm agreed-upon repair costs, and to ensure that charges quoted are not excessive or unreasonable.
    • Estimate the time necessary to repair damage.
    • CAT duty and create Photo Based estimates
    • Identify potential recovery situations and refer to Manager.
    • Arrange for removal of salvage for Claimants.
  • Contact repair facilities to confirm agreed-upon repair costs, and to ensure that charges quoted are not excessive or unreasonable.
  • Communicate with repair facilities, estimators and adjusters as required to ensure accuracy and completeness of estimates and identify claims where re-inspections may be required.
  • Identify total loss situations and determine actual cash value using both current market comparables, dealer quotes and Mitchell valuations, including salvage values and repair vs replace comparisons.
  • Recognize and assist adjuster in the preparation of coverage questions, fraud investigations, and large loss referrals.
  • Provide reports that are clear, concise, and comprehensive (to be used in the further processing of claims and record keeping).
  • Refer claims to adjuster and/or Manager when the actual damages do not agree with the loss report, or when the reported losses are suspicious in nature.
  • Inspect and escalate claims when an agreement cannot be reached with an insured, claimant, and/or repair shop.
  • Contact service/salvage yards and parts outlets to facilitate the appraisal process, and to keep abreast of market fluctuations in prices and labour.
  • Monitor repair and service shops and identify any concerns with vendors.
  • Work collaboratively with Supervisors and/or Managers on special projects and assignments when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline (i.e. Mechanics) and / or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of estimating and/or appraisal experience.
  • Working knowledge of the company principles and practices related to claims settlement, policy wordings, insurance contracts, fraud investigations, serious losses and coverage questions.
  • Knowledge on various motor vehicle type construction; expertise in the area of modern repair materials and processes.
    Knowledge of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, vehicle mechanical repairs and systems.
  • Proficiency with Mitchell Workcentre, Mitchell Connect and Mitchell Ultramate a must, with excellent communications skills both orally and written. Strong understanding of automobile insurance contract law with respect to automobile repairs
  • Ability to work within and adapt to PC oriented environments, including familiarity with e-mail and Internet skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Post-Secondary Appraisal Certification, and I-Car qualified; actively pursuing I-Car Platinum or CIP/FCIP designation an asset
  • Fluently bilingual (English / French) is a definite asset (a requirement in Eastern Region).
