SUMMARY – As a member of the U-Shin America new product development team, the Design Engineer is responsible to develop and release Tier 1 automotive electromechanical product designs in support of new business growth strategies. This position will be part of a global cross-functional product development team with both internal U-Shin and external customer interaction responsibilities. Vehicle handle system application product development will be the primary focus of this position

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Product Development / Release
    • Obtain, analyze and understand customer handle design and process requirements/expectations
      • As the key technical contact, interact directly with customers to clarify and confirm their requirements
    • Develop handle designs to customer requirements/expectations. Define designs via 3D, 2D and part specification data
      • Interact with internal company competency centers to implement company design standards and validate technical decisions
    • Lead and direct CAD designer to accomplish product definition data creation tasks
    • Ensure execution all product development tasks (DFM, DFMEA, tolerance analysis, simulation, material definition, etc…)
    • Acting within a project team structure, manage completion of all product development tasks within the framework of an overall program plan led by Program Management
    • Support interaction with company Purchasing and external suppliers regarding purchased part / raw material specifications
    • Maintain records of all design and validation related documentation and data such as 2D drawings, 3D CAD data, FMEAs, DVP&R, project timing and etc…
    • Release all required product development data and information into the customer release system
  2. New Business Development
    • Visit customers regularly, either independently or with Sales, for interactive customer engineering discussions.
    • Support new business acquisition by making customer technical presentations
    • Maintain an interaction with company competence centers to understand new product development and then assess how to apply within the NA market
    • Monitor market technology trends in order to drive new product development 
  3.  Travel – Travel required up to 5%; majority will be domestic

 

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Required Education, Skills, and Experience
    • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering degree preferred  
    • Minimum 5 years of automotive product development experience.
    • Previous automotive handles development, design and validation experience
    • CATIA V5 CAD skills
    • 2D component drawing development experience
    • Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Power Point)
    • Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills and demonstrated experience communicating technical information.
    • Ability to support domestic and international travel.
  2. Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience
    • Automotive actuator (i.e. latches, sunroof, charge port door, lockset, etc..) development experience
    • Working knowledge of plastic injection molding and die casting processes
    • Working knowledge of component and assembly costing
    • OEM (Stellantis, Ford, GM) TeamCenter experience
    • MS Project program milestone planning experience
    • CAE (FEA, Kinematic/Dynamic Simulation) tool application experience
    • Bi-lingual verbal and written communication skills. Spanish and/or Japanese preferred.
