Role Summary
The Chief Growth & Engagement Officer will be a key leader of NYPR's multiplatform transformation delivering accessible service, reaching local, national, and international stakeholders wherever they are, building lasting relationships, and converting that engagement into sustainable long-term loyalty and value.
Reporting to the CEO and working collaboratively and strategically in partnership with other NYPR leaders, this role partners throughout the organization to drive growth, deepen stakeholder relationships, and unlock new revenue opportunities. The CGEO will build teams to establish shared KPIs for growth, engagement, and loyalty, introduce cohesive and accountable ways of working, and build agile and inclusive operational processes that respond to a rapidly evolving landscape increasingly shaped by AI and other disruptive technologies.
Above all, the CGEO will be responsible for designing strategies, building consensus, and leading efforts to grow, engage and activate stakeholders across a broad portfolio of current and evolving platforms, all in the service of helping lead the organization to reimagine and renew its mission to inform, inspire and delight stakeholders in the ways that respond to the accelerating shifts in media consumption.
The CGEO will be a dynamic and accomplished individual with excellent leadership, communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization and outside partnerships. They will be a proven leader with strategic thinking abilities, strong management skills, demonstrated success in developing and executing marketing and audience development strategies through a collaborative approach, and the personal energy, enthusiasm, courage, agility and drive to motivate others and to mentor and rally a team to achieve exceptional results. In addition, this executive is a key leader in helping to build a people-centered culture that is diverse and inclusive.
Responsibilities
Growth & Engagement
- Sets, leads and works collaboratively and strategically in partnership with other NYPR leaders to create a unified multiplatform growth strategy, establishing clear acquisition, engagement, and retention goals across the full stakeholder lifecycle
- Establishes and owns key growth metrics and drives continuous improvement across platforms
- Expands reach to new audiences through platform-native approaches, including algorithmic and AI-assisted content discovery
- Ensures strategies reflect and serve diverse and underrepresented communities
Operating Model & Organizational Design
- Builds a scalable, team-oriented operating model that supports sustained, multiplatform growth, embedding AI tools where they improve speed, efficiency, and insight
- Establishes clear ownership, accountability, and decision-making structures across strategic planning and centralized services
- Aligns teams around shared goals, workflows, and service-oriented models
Multi-Platform Distribution
- Builds a scalable system to extend the lifecycle of content across video, podcasts, CTV, YouTube, social, newsletters, owned platforms, and more leveraging AI-assisted optimization for reach and targeting
- Partners with editorial and content leadership to widen distribution, maximize longevity, and expand promotional opportunities
Platform & Product Strategy
- Leads platform and product strategy for NYPR's digital ecosystem, including site, app, podcasts, YouTube, and social platforms
- Defines the role of each platform within a cohesive audience journey and sets product priorities in alignment with growth and engagement goals
Analytics, Insights and Research (AIR)
- Establishes a unified measurement framework across platforms, with AI-enhanced tools that surface actionable insights faster
- Builds shared learning loops across teams to institutionalize data-driven decision-making
Marketing
- Leads brand growth strategy across owned, earned, and platform channels ensuring consistency and coherence across all audience touchpoints
- Drives marketing around key moments (events, announcements, and platform launches) to maximize reach, visibility, and engagement
- Partners closely with Communications and PR to align growth priorities with NYPR's external narrative and amplify key content, talent, and institutional priorities
Partnerships
- Cultivates and leads strategic and operational partnerships with external vendors, peer organizations across the public media ecosystem (including NPR, Public Media Infrastructure, and other major-market stations), and other third parties
Qualifications
- 15+ years of progressive leadership in media, digital, or content-driven organizations, with 7+ years in senior executive roles (C-level, EVP, SVP) overseeing growth, digital, or product-led functions
- Proven experience in change management, and the finesse and conviction necessary to lead a proud and successful organization through the cultural and practical shifts necessary to thrive in its next era
- Demonstrated track record of materially scaling multiplatform reach and engagement with measurable impact across YouTube, podcasts, social, and owned-and-operated channels, and proven ability to design and operationalize full-funnel strategies (acquisition, engagement, retention) that sustain improvement in key metrics
- Experience leading organizations at scale, including management of large cross-functional teams and significant digital, product, or growth-related budgets
- Track record of contributing to or influencing revenue growth through engagement-driven strategies, including sponsorship, membership, or consumer revenue models
- Experience implementing enterprise-level measurement frameworks (defining KPIs, dashboards, and decision-making systems) with familiarity in AI-driven tools for audience development, distribution, personalization, and analytics, and the judgment to deploy them responsibly in a public media context
- Demonstrated success leading organizational transformation, including redesigning operating models, breaking down silos, and aligning senior stakeholders across editorial, product, marketing, and data teams around shared goals
- Strong reputation as both a strategic leader and operator, with clear examples of translating vision into execution and measurable outcomes
- Inclusive leadership approach with a demonstrated commitment to building diverse teams and expanding reach to underserved and underrepresented communities
- A deep knowledge and enthusiasm for the mission, model and values of public media
Work location: Hybrid (NYC-based), with a regular in-office presence (minimum of 3 days per week) to support cross-functional collaboration
Additional Information
This is a full-time role with an annual salary range of $300k-$350k. Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience, and organizational pay equity.
