WNYC is looking for an exceptional radio professional who is ready to take their career to the next level as our Assistant Program Director. As part of the programming team, your work is laser-focused on our loyal listeners. You have an ear for good radio and the skills to make it sound great on the air. You’re at your best when there is breaking news, special programming, and last-minute changes. Equally at home with your headphones on, jamming on daily tasks, as you are working in a cross-functional team on big ideas. Most importantly, you’re deeply curious about who our listeners are and how WNYC fits into their lives. 



  • Partner with the Program Director to optimize the station’s performance in all dayparts. 
  • Use your expert knowledge of broadcast trends and best practices, as well as your refined taste and keen intuition, to ensure our sound is polished and fresh. 
  • Put the finishing touches on each day’s automated programming to optimize promotional and continuity elements and ensure it’s ready for broadcast. 
  • Identify opportunities and strategize on how we promote content on our radio station, through social media and on other platforms to increase listening time and frequency.
  • Dig into audience data resources to track, analyze, and report on trends and help us refine how we interpret and use the data in our programming decisions.  
  • Help us develop strategies on how we promote and increase listening to our live stream digital platform.
  • Use your knowledge of existing and emerging audio and social media platforms to identify opportunities to expand our brand and reach younger and more diverse audiences.
  • Research and recommend relevant and timely special programming including programs for holidays and noteworthy cultural events.
  • Manage and optimize programming information published on our website and mobile app. 
  • Manage elements in our audio database, like station IDs, music beds, promos and credits. 
  • Maintaining a good working relationship with your colleagues in other departments is critical to your success in this role. 


  • Minimum of five years broadcast experience, preferably including public broadcasting. 
  • Familiarity with public radio programs, programming formatics, clocks, radio ratings and industry trends.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, collaborative, problem solving, entrepreneurial self-starter who prides themselves on always meeting deadlines. 
  • Strong verbal, listening and written communication skills.  
  • Knowledge of broadcast content delivery systems and web based content management software (CMS). 
  • Knowledge of Nielsen and RRC software for audience research and analysis desired. 
  • Production, show runner or live producing skills useful. 
  • Must be available for on-call and breaking news duties outside of regular business hours.

This is a full-time role with competitive compensation and eligibility for full benefits including excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid holidays, vacation, sick time, personal time, parental leave, and a 403(b) retirement plan. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this role is currently operating in a hybrid capacity with some in-person work in our office required. All facilities are cleaned often, our ventilation system is fully compliant with COVID safety standards, and mask wearing and being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is required. Our team has worked very hard to make this a safe environment for those whose job duties require them to be onsite.

However, this position is not a permanent hybrid position and is part of the New York City staff, and may be expected to work fully from the New York office in the future.
