New York Public Radio is looking for a talented, dynamic & curious journalism leader to serve as planning editor for The Takeaway, a daily news program with a unique take on the world produced by WNYC and PRX.

The planning editor is a member of The Takeaway’s leadership team partnering closely with the executive and senior producer and the program’s host  and managing editor, Melissa Harris-Perry.  The planning producer shares responsibility for creating the show’s distinctive voice, ensuring engagement with a wide array of topics, and welcoming a slate of diverse and original guests to the show.  The planning editor works closely with the team of producers to produce high impact, distinct content across broadcast and digital platforms. 

 The planning editor shares responsibility for: 

  • Developing short and long term plans for stories, segments, and guests.
  • Eliciting pitches and perspectives from team members. 
  • Suggesting, booking, and pre-interviewing guests for future segments and assisting segment producers with guest booking and development. . 
  • Creating and executing plans for coverage of big news stories, recurring segments and themes, and ongoing initiatives of The Takeaway broadcast and podcast.  

The planning editor is the primary producer responsible for the recurring “Deep Dive” series and regularly assists with writing and editing scripts . Overall, the successful candidate will be an organized, creative thinker, who can find the unexpected angle on news. 

This role reports to the Executive Producer of The Takeaway.


  • Work to ensure that content meets the highest journalistic and ethical standards 
  • Monitor national and international news with an eye to developing coverage for The Takeaway
  • Participate in (and sometimes lead) daily news meetings
  • Assist with daily and future bookings of show guests
  • Provide guidance on scripts as they are developed and edit scripts as needed.
  • Assist with writing and producing scripts
  • Pull tape for scripts and edit segment audio when needed 
  • Maintain editorial planning and coverage documents
  • Assume primary production responsibility for recurring Deep Dive series. 
  • Work with EP and host on local station and other collaborations and special projects
  • Provide supervision and support for special events, digital/virtual events, and off-site/ field reporting
  • Share supervisions responsibility for The Takeaway digital producer 
  • Serve as back-up/ fill-in for senior producer as needed 
  • At least 7 years of audio production (or other broadcast production such as television or digital broadcast)
    Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred, but not required.
  • Proven experience managing an editorial team (overseeing a specific beat, extensive special coverage plans etc) in radio, podcasting, print, or television
  • Proven ability and genuine passion for fostering an inclusive, diverse and innovative environment
  • Strong editorial and news judgement, with experience producing or editing in a changing, fast-paced news environment
  • Experience and a knack for shaping editorial strategies that cater to distinct appeal and user experiences across multiple storytelling platforms
  • A passion for podcasts and new forms of storytelling
  • Creative ideas about how to make smart audio shows that will get listeners hooked
  • Excellent written, editing and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with design thinking around news planning a plus 
  • Ability to stay calm, be kind and practice empathy with both colleagues and the audience 
  • Comfortable assembling audio sessions is a must 
  • A collaborative spirit is a must

This is a full-time role which includes benefits. New York Public Radio offers competitive compensation with excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time and parental leave.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this role is currently operating in a remote capacity, with an option to sometimes work from the office/studio if fully vaccinated against COVID-19. However, this position is not a permanent remote position and is part of the New York City staff, and may be expected to work from the New York office when it is safe to do so.
