The WNYC newsroom is looking for an enterprising and curious Assistant Editor to join our Day-of desk. This Assistant Editor is a versatile player-coach – a journalist who can edit and report on stories while also mentoring reporters on the desk. This role will also oversee audience engagement content and projects for both our on-air and digital audiences.
The Assistant Editor plays an integral role on one of the newsroom’s largest teams, ensuring that the most relevant, timely news makes it to our airwaves and website.
The journalist in this role will have strong reporting skills and creative, engaging ideas. The Assistant Editor will take on editing assignments, delegated by the Editor of the Day-of News desk, and regularly collaborate with other desks and teams on relevant stories and projects.
This role also oversees our broadcast and digital coverage on Friday nights, planning ahead for our coverage the next day and assigning and editing stories with hosts and a reporter during the shift.
The Assistant Editor upholds the highest standards of journalistic quality and integrity, ensuring that our journalism is engaging, timely, accurate, clear, thorough, fair, and impactful.
This role reports into the Editor of the Day-of News desk and has a Monday to Friday schedule.
- Evangelize and uphold the strategic vision and goals for the Day-Of desk
- Create engaging journalism that attracts loyal and diverse audiences in digital, on-air, on-demand audio and social
- Take on editing assignments from the Editor of the Day-Of desk
- Oversee our on-air and digital coverage on Friday nights, leading a reporter on day-of events and stories
- Hold all content to the highest journalistic standards -- from breaking news to longform features
- Help mentor and coach reporters on the desk through pitches and edits
- Assist the Editor with organizing daily and long-term coverage planning
- Collaborate with peers and partners across the organization on relevant content and projects
- Foster a culture of accountability, creativity and innovation in storytelling
- Minimum of 5 years professional journalism experience, including some managerial experience
- Ability to lead, inspire, manage and convey knowledge/feedback to a team of reporters
- Ability to conceive and execute innovative approaches to storytelling with a demonstrated ability to see the story that’s going to engage readers and to anticipate reader interests
- Deft writing and editing skills, including the ability to sharpen or rewrite copy with grammatical and style precision under immediate deadline pressure
- Sophisticated communication skills, including oral, written, and public speaking
- Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism; and impeccable journalistic integrity and judgment
- Demonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issues
- Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
- Ability to manage several projects concurrently
- Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion competency in newsrooms
This is a full-time role with a salary range of $85,000-$100,000 per year (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and organizational pay equity. New York Public Radio offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time as well as parental leave.
This role is currently operating in a hybrid capacity, with the ability to sometimes work from home. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from the NYC office on specified days with regularity.
Given this role will be in the office/studios, being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is required unless NYPR has approved a specific religious or medical exemption in advance of the first day of work. At this time, NYPR defines being fully vaccinated as having received two Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations or one Johnson and Johnson vaccination.
