What We Are Looking For

The JFK School of Law invites applicants to serve as the School of Law Bar Coach.  This is a part time, 20 hour/week position reporting to the Dean of the Law School.

 The Bar Coach will assist the school in the development of a CA Bar Success Program, focused on guiding and mentoring JD students to successfully prepare for the CA Bar Examination and the CA First Year Law Student Exam (collectively, “CA Bar Examinations”).  The Bar Coach will provide academic support to JFK School of Law JD students in a variety of forms, including CA Bar Examinations requirements and deadlines, synchronous and asynchronous coaching sessions, tutorials, and webinars beginning in the students’ first year and through the Bar Examination.  The Bar Coach will identify each student’s unique learning strengths, develop individual plans for academic support, and bar exam preparation.

This is a new position in the School of Law and we seek a dynamic individual to join our team to help develop and implement this Program.

Essential Functions

  • Assist students in navigating the Committee of Bar Examiners requirements for law students, including reporting and exam responsibilities and timelines.  
  • Working with faculty, assess students in all three years of the JD program and advise and mentor students as they go through the Program and ultimately on bar exam preparedness.
  • Assist students in using the IRAC style of writing expected in school and on the bar examination.
  • Provide synchronous one-to-one and group academic and bar coaching.
  • Assist students in time management skills
  • Assist students in study skills
  • Maintain records of student contact and engage in the assessment of student learning and bar readiness.
  • Help students identify their learning strengths and weaknesses and connect them with the necessary resources to aid in success.
  • Evaluate student learning styles, skills, deficiencies, and goals; identify appropriate learning resources for them to use; and facilitate their use of those resources.
  • Develop academic resources to assist in bar preparedness and law school success.
  • Participate in required training, coaching, and other activities that promote high-quality coaching.
  • Attend team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the law school administration.
  • Reasonable and consistent attendance to fulfill requirements of the position.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the CA Bar Examination and the CA First Year Law Student Examination
  • Understanding the the skills and attitudes needed for law school success.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and other applications in the Microsoft Office suite.

 Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctorate degree in a relevant field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Licensed attorney in CA preferred.
  • Previous success in tutoring, academic coaching, or teaching legal forms of writing required; the ideal candidate will have previous success specifically with Bar Exam Preparation or First Year Student Exam Preparation.
  • Ability to provide personalized instruction in non-technical language based on students’ unique strengths and growth areas with little to no preparation required.
  • Experience in an online learning environment.
  • Proficiency in using technology in the delivery of education required.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications.

 Working Conditions

This position operates in a remote, home office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and phones.
