This position is primarily responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive occupational therapy program for properly referred in-patients and out-patients. The Occupational Therapy staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients assigned.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Assessment and Planning

  • Assess patients upon referral by physician (i.e. sensory function, motor function, activities of daily living, location and intensity of paint, etc.). Formulates short and long term goals written in terms of functional outcomes with an established time frame for accomplishment.
  • Involves patient and/or patient's significant other in the formulation of goals and treatments plans. Explains treatment objectives and methods to patients and patient's significant others as necessary. Plans a comprehensive treatment program which will be most beneficial to patient in reaching desired goals.
  • Discusses assessment results and plans with appropriate physicians, nurses and other department personnel; suggests involvement of Social Services, Dietitian and other ancillary services as deemed necessary. Contacts Social Services for assistance needed (ie. securing equipment, home health, etc).
  • Identifies and communicates patient's discharge needs at the time of the initial assessment. Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with patients/patients' significant other and interpret verbal/nonverbal behavior. Attends multidisciplinary discharge planning rounds as assigned and shares information with appropriate co-workers.
  • Assigns patients to be treated by COTAs and OTTs according to level of skill required by patient and as possessed by staff. Supervises treatments provided by students and OTTs. Routinely checks patient's ID bracelet prior to assessment.

 

Evaluates patients response to treatment and makes necessary revisions

  • Determines when patients have reached maximum benefits from therapy and are ready for discharge from occupational therapy services. Notifies attending physician of significant changes in patient's status or regarding matters causing concern. Correctly records charges on charge sheet and enters patient charges in the computer as needed. Processes in-patient and out-patient referrals daily.

 

Provides Patient and Family Instruction and makes appropriate referrals

  • Directs patients in the use and care of assistive devices, exercise, and other special equipment
  • Performs on-going evaluation of patient's progress and revises treatment plan as necessary for all patients, including those assigned to OTT's and students. Documents in patient's progress notes in chart regarding assessment, plan, treatment, instruction, evaluation and recommendations.

 

Treatments

  • Correctly utilizes therapeutic modalities as certified and as deemed appropriate (i.e. heat, cold, light, sound, traction, massage, therapeutic exercises, and other rehabilitative procedures). Ensures the safety of patients at all times. Informs and involves the Rehab service Director as needed.
  • Ensures the treatments participating in and supervising are completely and correctly performed in accordance with established policies and procedures. Processes in-patient referrals daily.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Occupational Therapy from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy is required. 

Certification & Licensures

Active license as an Occupational Therapist in the state of Tennessee and Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association is required.

Experience:

One year of Occupational Therapy experience is required.
