Physical Therapy


Description

This position is primarily responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive physical therapy program for properly referred in-patients and out-patients. The Physical Therapy staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients assigned.

Additional education requirements
Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Physical Therapy from an accredited school of Physical Therapy.

BLS - Required

Additional Certification & Licensures details
Active license as a physical therapist in the state of Tennessee.

Assessment and Planning

  • Assess patients upon referral by physician (i.e. sensory function, motor function, gait, location and intensity of paint, etc.). Formulates short and long term goals written in terms of functional outcomes with an established time frame for accomplishment. Assess the patient pain upon therapy visit. Involves patient and/or patient's significant other in the formulation of goals and treatments plans.
  • Plans a comprehensive treatment program which will be most beneficial to patient in reaching desired goals. Identifies and communicates patient's discharge needs at the time of the initial assessment. Discusses assessment results and plans with appropriate physicians, nurses and other department personnel; suggests involvement of Social Services, Dietitian and other ancillary services as deemed necessary.
  • Assigns patients to be treated by PTAs and PTTs according to level of skill required by patient and as possessed by staff. Supervises treatments provided by students and PTTs
Evaluates patients response to treatment and makes necessary revisions
  • Performs on-going evaluation of patient's progress and revises treatment plan as necessary for all patients, including those assigned to PTT's, PTA, and students.
  • Determines when patients have reached maximum benefits from physical therapy and are ready for discharge from physical therapy services. Notifies attending physician of significant changes in patient's status or regarding matters causing concern. Documents in patient's progress notes in chart regarding assessment, plan, treatment, instruction, evaluation and recommendations.
Provides patient and family instruction and makes the appropriate referrals
  • Explains treatment objectives and methods to patients and patient's significant others as necessary. Directs patients in the use and care of gait devices, exercise, and other special equipment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with patients/patients' significant other and interpret verbal/nonverbal behavior.
General Duties
  • Correctly records charges on charge sheet and enters patient charges in the computer as needed. Makes clinic appointments for patients as needed. Cleans and preps gym area when necessary. Re-stocks linens and equipment as needed. Informs Secretarial staff of supply needs. Attendance
Treatments
  • Correctly utilizes therapeutic modalities as deemed appropriate (i.e. heat, cold, light, sound, traction, massage, therapeutic exercises, and other rehabilitative procedures). Ensures the treatments participating in and supervising are completely and correctly performed.
  • Ensures the safety of patients at all times. Informs and involves the Director of Rehabilitation Services as needed. Demonstrates ability to anticipate patient's needs and to care for an allotted number of patients within a designated time frame.
