Education
Degree/Diploma: Bachelor’s degree preferred
Certification & Licensures:
- Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry (CSTR) required.
- Certified AIS Specialist (CAISS) required.
- Must attend/participate in ICD-10 course or refresher course every 5 years.
Experience:
- Trauma Registry experience required
- Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM; AIS and ISS coding required
- Knowledge and proficiency in medical terminology and anatomy required
- V5 and Report Writer proficiency required
- Image Trend database proficiency preferred
- Excel and Microsoft Office applications proficiency required
- ability to work independently.

Job Duties:
Data Abstraction - Completes data entry to ensure concurrent registries and support report production while ensuring compliance with deadlines for all registry staff. Assures data accuracy and evaluates appropriateness of ICD-9-CM, ISS and AIS codes as necessary. Coordinates with other departments and agencies (pre hospital, radiology, pathology, coroner, etc) as needed to gather all the data necessary to complete the abstraction on each patient.
Database Management/Support - Builds and maintains various types of files, extracts information to support departmental management and decision-making. Monitors data flow and data quality of registry staff as well as serves as a resource to other users. Directs/redirects complex or programming issues to the appropriate resource(s). Makes corrections and suggests interventions as necessary. Modifies database daily to meet business needs. Maintains all reference materials necessary for trauma registry, coding and abstracting, etc.
Registry Reporting - Coordinates the collection of the data for reporting to state and national registries including but not limited to the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), ACS National Trauma Data Base (NTDB) and State of Tennessee Trauma Registry. Assists in the preparation for the Trauma site visit. Analyzes statistical information in reporting, i.e., RTS (Revised Trauma Score), and ISS (Injury Severity Score). Prepares reports for committee meetings, PIPS, research, business/strategic planning and injury prevention as requested.
Registry Validation - Maintains processes of data validation. Provides regular feedback to registry staff on validity scores. Provides feedback to documenting providers on detailing injury descriptions to improve injury severity scoring through the ACS (TQIP) Team Meeting and other forums.
Leadership - Trains support staff on Trauma data entry functions as needed. Devises and employs methods to ensure compliance with concurrent registries. Plans and administrates monthly TQIP team meetings.
