MRI Tech - Pool
Description
This position is primarily responsible for performing a variety of diagnostic imaging procedures by operating complex imaging equipment to include: MRI scanner, accompanying contrast injector and patient monitoring devices. Performs patient care services relevant to imaging procedures to include IV access starts and contrast injection. Maintains a log of procedures, performs QA, insures availability of supplies and responsible for maintaining current imaging knowledge base. May also be employed to operate routine and fluoroscopic imaging equipment. This position requires assisting radiologists and referring physicians. The MRI technologist performs job duties with independence and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Work area assignments and patient interaction
- Checks board daily for assigned shifts and duties.
- Continually monitors requests at reception desk; evaluates for accuracy and appropriateness.
- Routinely checks patient ID prior to procedure or contrast administration.
- Provides adequate exam explanations to patient and/or significant other.
- Screens child-bearing age females for possible pregnancy and takes appropriate action.
- Provides care based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
- Monitors patient condition during procedure; initiates life-support measures when necessary.
- Ensures proper dismissal of patient.
- Utilizes appropriate measures when transporting patients.
Supervises and Instructs Students
- Evaluates radiographs taken by x-ray students for technical quality and completeness.
- Provides direct/in-direct supervision as required.
- Instructs trainees daily and reports clinical progress as needed.
- Completes student evaluation sheets.
Performs Other Duties as Assigned
- Maintains appropriate logs of procedures conducted.
- Cross-trains imaging staff as directed.
Performance of Medical Imaging Procedures and Film Processing.
- Correctly positions patient providing maximum comfort to obtain projection.
- Calculates and selects appropriate technical factors for imaging procedure.
- Insures radiation protection for patient, self, and others when performing studies.
- Promotes a safe environment closing doors during procedures and/or announcing initiation of exposures.
- Properly processes films and evaluates for quality and completeness.
- Knows and obtains standard radiographic views according to protocol.
- Compares exam with previous study and mounts films for interpretation.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Procedures
- Screens patients, escorts and hospital personnel for entrance into the magnet room.
- Ensures patient is prepped (hx form, medications, etc.) prior to procedure.
- Obtains standard pulse sequences according to protocol.
- Monitors cryogen level and circulation.
- Schedules MRI exams and attempts to maximize productivity.
- Transfers, stores and retrieves studies to/from storage discs.
Fluoroscopic Examinations
- Properly screens patient for allergies.
- Obtains signed consent form for imaging studies requiring consent.
- Properly sets up trays, supplies and equipment.
- Properly positions patient and equipment for correct views.
- Administers contrast media orally, rectally or intravenously as required.
Education:
High School Diploma is required.
Certifications:
BLS is required. Active certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Completion of formal didactic course and certification in MRI preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
