About the role
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Data Engineering to lead our people, data strategy, architecture, and engineering teams. This individual will be responsible for building scalable data platforms, ensuring high-quality data delivery, and enabling advanced analytics and AI/ML initiatives across the enterprise. The ideal candidate has a strong technical foundation in modern data platforms, a proven track record of leading engineering teams, and the ability to partner with business and technology stakeholders to drive data-driven outcomes and possess an analytical mindset and have a proven track record working with cross-functional business and technology teams.
Reporting to the VP, Data Engineering, the Director of Data Engineering will be primarily responsible for leading and mentoring an innovative team of Data Engineers - growing people as you grow our business and technology (60% hands-on production support of operational solutions and 40% leading and managing team).
This is a flexible hybrid remote role out of our Vienna, VA or Raleigh, NC office.
 
You Will 
  • Execute the enterprise data engineering roadmap in alignment with business objectives, driving initiatives that support growth, innovation, and operational excellence.
  • Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise-scale data pipelines, warehouses, and lake houses, ensuring high reliability, scalability, and performance across multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure).
  • Implement best practices in data modeling, ETL/ELT processes, orchestration, and API-based integrations to support seamless data flow and accessibility.
  • Partner with Data Governance and Security teams to uphold compliance with regulatory requirements and enterprise data standards, ensuring secure and ethical data usage.
  • Partner with Analytics, Data Science, and Business teams to deliver impactful data products; work closely with Product, IT, Operations, and Business leaders to translate strategic requirements into scalable data solutions.
  • Establish and maintain frameworks for data quality, lineage, observability, and monitoring, while enforcing strong metadata management and documentation practices.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of data engineers and architects, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors, technology partners, and consultants to optimize technology investments and delivery outcomes.
  • Lead the architecture and integration of the enterprise Customer Data Platform (CDP) to deliver unified customer profiles, scalable data ingestion, and real-time activation across channels. Collaborate with marketing team to enable advanced segmentation, personalization, and omnichannel engagement.
  • Establish MLOps practices to operationalize and monitor AI/ML models in production environments.
  • Drive innovation through AI-powered automation, advanced analytics, and predictive insights that enhance customer experience and business performance.
 
About You
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Science Technology, or the equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in data warehousing and ETL development (using tools such as MS SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Pentaho, or Talend). 
  • 6+ years of experience writing and optimizing advanced SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and triggers. 
  • 5+ years of proven experience leading and managing data engineering teams. 
    • 3+ years of experience with reporting and visualization tools (such as SSRS, Power BI, or Tableau). 
    • Experience leading AI team as a people leader/manager 
    • Prior experience at the Director level is a plus  
  • Experience working agile data environment in healthcare and/or retail industry is a plus
  • Consulting in software product development background is a plus
  • Proven expertise in enterprise data engineering, architecture, and strategy execution.
  • Strong proficiency in building and managing data pipelines
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and Azure data ecosystems.
  • Deep understanding of data governance, security, and regulatory compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  •  Experience implementing data quality, lineage, observability, and metadata management frameworks.
  • Strong leadership and team development skills with a collaborative, innovation-focused mindset.
  • Familiarity with Customer Data Platforms and real-time data integration.
  • Knowledge of MLOps tools and practices (MLflow, SageMaker, Kubeflow) for model deployment and monitoring.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and strategic problem-solving abilities.
