Job Summary

Following competency assessment, the Respiratory Care Technician assists with providing patient care for basic respiratory therapies and oxygen delivery. The Respiratory Tech is also responsible for keeping equipment and supplies available and ready for use in the administration of respiratory therapy. 

First Year Techs assist the respiratory therapist with completing their assigned patient care. The First Year Tech takes direction from the licensed respiratory therapist and remains in the near vicinity where the therapist is performing their work.
 
Second Year Techs provide patient care with indirect (onsite and immediately available for direction) supervision by the Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinator or Charge Respiratory Therapist.

All Respiratory Techs are under the supervision (direct or indirect) of a licensed respiratory therapist.

Requirements: 

  • Actively enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy Program having completed the first adult critical care rotation (Second Year Tech)
  • BLS

Essential Duties:

  • Cleans, assembles and performance tests various pieces of patient care equipment. Maintains back up Respiratory Care equipment inventory at designated storage areas throughout the facility. Supports the clinical staff by delivering patient care equipment to the patient care units in emergent situations.
  • Restocks Respiratory Care supply carts and oxygen cylinders.
  • Performs and documents basic respiratory procedures for adult and pediatric patients including incentive spirometry, medicated aerosol treatments (excluding continuous medicated aerosol therapy or critical care patient), MDI/DPI administration, CPT, Flutter Valve, Volara, EzPAP™, PEP, oxygen administration and pulse oximetry.
  • Interns may draw arterial blood gases and perform ABG analysis only under the direct supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist.
  • Performs basic respiratory assessments for patients during therapy. Alerts their supervising therapist of any changes to a patient’s condition. Seeks supervising therapist’s assistance with respiratory assessments and plan of care for newly admitted/ordered respiratory patients. Seeks supervising therapist’s assistance when there is a change in the patient’s respiratory status so that the plan of care can be adjusted by the therapist per protocol.
  • Respiratory Techs may participate with care during a Code Blue or Medical Response Team (MRT) call under the direct supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist.
  • Charges for any therapies/services provided.
