Position: General Surgery Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA)
Location: Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, MI
Schedule: Full-time, Day Shift (Monday – Friday); Four 10-hour days with rotating on-call assignments
 
POSITION OVERVIEW
 
Munson Healthcare is seeking a General Surgery Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to deliver high-quality care to patients in both the operating room and inpatient hospital setting. In this role, you will serve as a first assist in the operating room and participate in inpatient rounds. The APP will assist 11 surgeons, including those specializing in robotic, bariatric, breast, and colorectal surgeries, in addition to other general surgery cases. The position includes some rotating weekend and overnight call for additional surgical subspecialties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Inpatient Care:
  • Admit patients to the hospital and perform daily rounds
  • Write orders, progress notes, and discharge summaries
  • Provide pre- and post-operative education to patients and their families
  • Order/interpret diagnostic imaging and tests/labs
  • Diagnose and conduct comprehensive patient assessment and management
  • Prescribe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies
  • Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams (surgeons, hospitalists, cardiologists, urologists, nursing staff, etc.)
OR First Assist:
  • First assist surgeons in the operating room daily with scheduled and add-on surgical cases
  • Assist OR coordinators with case card selection, supplies, and equipment
  • Work with OR circulating nurses and surgical techs to maintain surgical flow
  • Place pre- and post-operative orders
QUALIFICATIONS 
 
Education & Training:
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (for Nurse Practitioners) OR Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies (for Physician Assistants)
Licensure & Certification:
  • State of Michigan Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required
Experience:
  • General Surgery experience is preferred but not required. Candidates with a strong desire to learn in a surgical environment are encouraged to apply.
