The Critical Care Advanced Practice Professional (APP) is responsible primarily for the medical management and coordination of care for patients admitted to the Critical Care Service under the supervision of the attending Intensivist.  The APP performs his/her functions based on his/her personal experience, professional judgment and according to Michigan law: (1) discussion with the physician; (2) knowledge of physician preference; (3) written protocols developed for Critical Care and Munson Medical Center (MMC); (4) written policies of this institution.  In addition; the APP will perform, under the supervision of an intensivist, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks related to the Critical Care patient throughout the patient’s admission to MMC.  The APP will be responsible for the History and Physical examination, admission notes, daily progress notes, admit and routine orders, daily rounds and attendance at meetings as defined by the Medical Director of the ICU. The APP will share and in some cases primarily cover night call.

In addition, the APP will help direct the management of a broad array of critically ill patients including neuro critically ill and stroke patients, under the direct supervision of the Intensivist. The APP will be responsible for:

1. Admission note and orders to the ICU and daily progress notes. 
2. Collaboration and coordination of care with family members, consultants, PT/OT, Speech Path, RT, pharmacy, and other ancillary services as needed.
3. Participating in Multidisciplinary rounds.
4. Ordering appropriate daily labs, diagnostic studies and medications.
5. Applying current technology in monitoring hemodynamic status and ICP monitoring.
6. Have an understanding of basic Ventilator management
7. Assisting with bedside procedures- CVC and A-line placement, chest tubes, Percutaneous tracheostomy, PEG tube and wound care.
8. Participation in self education and grand rounds or other education as defined by the Medical Director of the ICU.
9. The transfer of the patient out of the ICU.

Master of Science degree from an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant Program Master of Science.

Current Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.

Current Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Current Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Candidate must apply for and be granted appropriate clinical privileges through MMC’s normal credentialing processes before rendering services
Previous experience in ICU or emergency setting is desirable.

Current ACLS, PALS, ENPC, or APLS, BLS and ATLS. In addition to the current certifications to be maintained the Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS), Virtual Critical Care Rounds II (VCCR): Adult by the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Advanced Practice Provider Orientation Course, and Emergency Neurological Life Support Certification by Neuro Critical Care Society will also be required. 

The position is under the direct and general supervision of the Clinical Lead for the Critical Care APP Program and Medical Director of the MMC ICU. The incumbent will be expected to work effectively and positively with MMC Intensivists that are associated and managing patients as a part of the Critical Care Service.

1. A full complement of staff will involve having APP’s always in-house to provide 24-hour/seven coverage for Critical Care patient response.
2. Respond to Critical Care consultations within 30 minutes of notification.
3. Manage the Critical Care patient care in the ICU under supervision of the Intensivist, including but not limited to:  performing history and physical examination, initial resuscitation, ordering of appropriate lab and radiographic studies, interpretation of lab and x-ray results, appropriate consults, admission/discharge orders, addressing code status.
4. Procedures including suturing, skin stapling, chest tube placement, line placement (central lines, arterial lines), percutaneous tracheostomy, and wound care as directed by the Intensivist.
5. Dictation of history & physicals, consultations, and procedure notes.
6. Address clinical documentation inquiries (CDI) that he/she is responsible for in a timely and professional manner. 
7. Daily contact with Intensivist, and others as appropriate.
8. Rounding and management of critically ill patients including:  monitoring progress, progress notes, ordering daily labs and x-rays, interpretation of labs and x-rays, appropriate consults, floor calls, discharge planning, and follow-up.
9. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat unique needs of trauma and surgical patient age groups served.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by the Medical Director of the MMC ICU.
