The Regional Manager (RM) for Health Information Management (HIM) is directly responsible for the daily oversight of HIM, medical transcription, and release of information at the following Munson Community Hospitals:  Charlevoix, Otsego, Grayling, Cadillac and Manistee.

The RM is responsible for managing all staff to achieve expected productivity and quality goals.

This position is responsible for departmental performance that aligns with the broader revenue cycle goals and Munson Healthcare strategic initiatives.  The RM assists in the development and evolution of the overall policies for Munson Healthcare HIM operations. 

The RM exercises functional and administrative support for the medical transcription and dictation systems, including interfaces to the electronic medical record in the HIM departments.

This position assists the HIM System Director with planning, service commitment, budgets and internal quality assessments and controls.  The RM also works in collaboration with the HIM System Director to ensure the integrity of a complete and accurate medical record and the education and training of staff.

The RM actively participates in building positive working relationships with other Revenue Cycle departments, clinical providers, and practice staff.  The RM acts as a resource for Munson Healthcare on issues related to HIM.

Travel to system facilities for work and meetings is an expected, routine occurrence.



  • Bachelor Degree in Health Information Management (HIM) is required. Consideration may be given to candidates with a Health Information Technology (HIT) degree with 10 or more years’ extensive, applicable experience.
  • Current standing as a nationally certified RHIT or RHIA is required.  Preference will be given to those who additionally possess certification as a CCS and/or CPC.
  • A minimum of 5 years supervisory or leadership experience is required.
  • Previous experience in non-supervisory, technical health information management positions is required.
  • A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the revenue cycle.  A working knowledge of revenue cycle practices for professional services is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills with ability to manage cross-functional resolutions against a deadline is required.
  • Demonstrated ability in effective communication, motivational and interpersonal relationship skills is required.  Proven ability in written and oral communication is required.  
  • Previous experience in creating, providing or facilitating meeting and/or training presentations is required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate good judgment, be self-motivated and well organized. 
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize key tasks and work in a complex, stressful environment is required.  Must be able to simultaneously manage multiple projects and staff.



The Regional Manager (RM) reports directly to the HIM System Director.

The RM directly supervises the Munson Community Hospitals (as outlined above) staff who perform HIM, medical transcription, and release of information functions.

This position has a close working partnership with the HIM and Coding Managers at all Munson Healthcare hospitals.    

This position has frequent contact with the Medical Staff, Nursing Administrative Staff, Department Directors, Nursing staff, other clinical staff, and physician office staff for all Munson Healthcare system hospitals.

  7. Creates and directs the implementation of the Medical Staff policies and procedures and rules and regulations relative to the quality of documentation and timely completion of patient medical records.
  8. Develops and implements goals, objectives and productivity targets incorporating strategic imperatives. Reviews, reports on progress, and revises as necessary. 
  9. Develops and assures maintenance of systems necessary for supporting the privacy, timeliness and quality of a health information system that meets the needs of an active medical staff, patients and accrediting and regulatory agencies.
  10. Hires employees, manages human resource utilization and supports staff development.
  11. Plans, facilitates, and documents appropriate orientation and competency programs.
  12. Executes routine and timely individual staff performance reviews and competencies. Updates job descriptions as necessary.
  13.  Approves bi-weekly payroll records and maintains electronic attendance records on all HIM personnel.
  14. Monitors and adheres to remote medical transcription program guidelines.
  15. Maintains personal knowledge of MHC personnel policies and administers these fairly and uniformly.  Utilizes progressive corrective action according to policy.
  16.  Develops and implements in-service educational programs for employees.  Works in collaboration with the System or Regional HIM Educators/Coordinators to assess staff continuing education needs and plans to assist staff in meeting those needs. 
  17. Interprets the priority of work activities and assigns responsibility accordingly. Independent judgement is exercised.
  18. Acts as a regional resource and active leader in solving moderate to complex problems related to HIM and development of the electronic medical record.
  19. Identifies and tracks key barriers and process defects and takes action for sustained resolutions, utilizing appropriate process improvement techniques.
  20. Manages the activities and troubleshoots any problems associated with all electronic systems and/or any service contracted to perform these functions: Medical transcription, centralized dictation and speech recognition, Meditech chart deficiency/tracking, Cerner Community Works, Powerchart and release of information.
  21. Manages the procedures and application of delinquent medical records and application of provider suspension.  Ensure that medical record arrangement, analysis and scanning takes place in an accurate and timely manner.  Ensure the availability of records needed for continuity of patient care, quality review activities, medical/legal requests and other authorized purposes.
  22. Ensures that dictation is transcribed in a timely and accurate manner and that medical records are processed promptly after provider completion activities.
  23. Establishes and monitors the quality review standards for work performed and takes corrective actions when problems are identified or goals are not met.
  24. Participates in the development of the capital equipment and operating budgets. Is accountable for maintaining the integrity of the budget, utilizing resources appropriately and reporting variances. Maintains an adequate budget with no greater than a +/- 2% variance.
  25. Conducts ongoing HIM and medical transcription team meetings and Huddles.
  26. Provides for new medical staff department orientation.
  27. Attends and/or presents at System HIM, Senior Leadership, and Medical Staff meetings as necessary or upon request. 
  28. Participates and/or leads various committees and workgroups.
  29. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends.
  30. Provides for the preceptorship of health information management student internships.
  31. Performs all other duties as assigned.
