Job Title:Request for Consideration Sergeant, Professional Development

Dept/Div:MTA Police Department/ Professional Standards

Supervisor:Commanding Officer, Professional Standards

Location:Various

Hours:Four (4) tours of Ten Hours and Sixteen Minutes (10:16) with Three (3) consecutive rest days

 

Summary:

The Department is seeking qualified Sergeants who are interested in being considered for assignment to the Professional Development Section. The primary goals of the unit are to provide specific job training that will improve the safety, performance, and proficiency of its Officers and to ensure the Department’s philosophy and standard operating procedures are clearly understood. Professional Development personnel will be assigned to work four tours of ten hours and sixteen minutes with three consecutive rest days.

 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist Director of Recruit Training School in overseeing Academy Operations.
  • Supervise and train staff assigned to Recruit Training.
  • Coordinate and maintain daily in-service training schedules of recruit training instructors.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of recruit training delivery methods and procedures.
  • Oversee facility maintenance and ensure safety plans are being adhered to within the Police Academy.
  • Supervise and direct numerous subordinates at multiple MTA and or Law Enforcement locations.
  • Oversee the development of all MTA Police Lesson Plans in accordance with DCJS standards.
  • Act as liaison between the MTAPD and NYPD Academy Staff.
  • Responsible for maintenance of MTA Courses being offered within the NYPD Academy.
  • Responsible for attending Training Conferences and Seminars to ensure all Department members are trained in compliance with the most current New York State Department of Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Regulations.

 

Qualifications:

Members must, at a minimum, have the following qualifications to be considered for appointment:

  • Must have 5 or more years MTAPD or combined Law Enforcement experience.
  • Must be a Sergeant at the time of appointment.
  • Must have NYSDCJS General Topics Instructor certification at time of appointment.
  • Must maintain peak physical condition and present as such.
  • Previous experience in MTAPD Training unit, specifically NYPD recruit training preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in preparing and presenting reports
  • Working knowledge of New York State DCJS Training and Accreditation Standards
  • Prior experience conducting and/or leading training or military supervision experience will be highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the management of the Basic Course for Police Officers as dictated by NYSDCJS.
  • Demonstrated administrative skills such as scheduling and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of procurement procedures, including writing specifications for equipment and preparing training materials and correspondence.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with trainee officers and other agency representatives.
  • Successfully complete a panel interview
  • Candidates who have substantiated discipline/suspension or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism not related to sickness or work injury may be removed from interview consideration or consideration for the position.
  • Complete a "Candidate Application" (Form #69) and forward it to his or her immediate supervisor who shall complete the applicable sections and then forward the form through the chain of command
