Job Title:Request for Consideration – Police Officer, Professional Standards Division/Ceremonial Unit Liaison

Dept/Div:MTA Police Department

Supervisor:Commanding Officer, Professional Standards Division

Location:Various (locations within the MTA service area)

Hours:Four (4) tours of ten (10) hours and sixteen (16) minutes with three (3) consecutive rest days

 

Summary:

The Department is seeking qualified Members who are interested in being considered for assignment to the Professional Standards Division-Ceremonial Unit Liaison. The Professional Standards Division is a support division of the MTA Police Department.  The primary goals of the division are to enhance accountability and foster continuous improvement within the department by consolidating key functions, including policy, training, Internal Affairs, Applicant Investigations, and Leave Management. The Professional Standards Division also oversees the Ceremonial Unit which upholds the heritage, customs, and professional image of the department and who represent the department at funerals, memorials, and ceremonial functions with dignity and respect.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Actively participate in formal ceremonies.  This includes funerals, wakes, memorial services, and parades.
  • Responsible for preparing and presenting the administrative and operational planning of all funerals, wakes, memorial services, and parades to the Ceremonial Unit Supervisors.
  • Responsible for the collaboration with other departments, organizations, and agencies to ensure seamless coordination at larger scale ceremonial events.
  • Responsible for the coordination of all ceremonial unit training.
  • Officers may be directed to instruct classes in any of the following disciplines: In-service training, Ceremonial Unit Training, and any discipline the Commanding Officer of Professional Standards deems necessary to instruct.
  • Officers may be directed to instruct classes at Graybar, Hastings, Bethpage, Jamaica, NYPD Police Academy, MTAPD Academy, Randal’s Island, Stormville or anywhere the Department intends to host training courses.
  • Work with Integrated Communications Unit to Develop Training Videos as requested.
  • Officers may be required to take on administrative role within the professional development section.
  • Will be required to assume Patrol Duties as a field training officer when requested to do so by supervision.
  • Attend instructor classes to stay up to date with curriculum.

 

Qualifications:

Qualified Candidates must, at a minimum, have the following qualifications/requirements to be considered for appointment.

 

  • A minimum of 5 (five) years as an MTA Police Officer.
  • At least two (2) completed years of ceremonial unit experience is required for this position.
  • Must have strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Communication skills including, but not limited to, being able to interact with trainee officers, academy recruits, special operations officers, and other agency representatives.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills.
  • Possess a high level of motivation with the ability to multitask when asked to do so.
  • Be able to meet deadlines as requested by supervision.
  • Demonstrated competence on patrol.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred but not required.
  • Experience participating in and planning funeral details is preferred.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and participate in physical training exercises when asked to do so.
  • Instructor development certification preferred but not required.
  • Certified Field Training Officer Strongly Preferred but not required.
  • Successfully complete a panel interview.
  • Commit to serve in this assignment for a minimum of two (2) years.
  • Candidates who have substantiated discipline/suspension or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism not related to sickness or work injury may be removed from the interview consideration or consideration from the position.
  • Complete a "Candidate Application" (Form #69) and forward it to his or her immediate supervisor who shall complete the applicable sections and then forward the form through the chain of command.

 

Other Information:

 

Based on the needs of the department, members may have to change their regional designation.

Once selected, the MTA Police Department will provide training to assist the Officer to achieve the below requirements.  Remaining in the Professional Standards Division is contingent on successful acquisition and completion of the following requirements.

 

  • Successful completion of New York State Instructor Development course.
  • Ability to acquire additional certifications as needed by the Department.  Travel may be required to secure these certifications.

 

Interested members who meet the above listed qualifications will be invited to participate in a panel interview.  Candidates should understand that they are not guaranteed an assignment with the Professional Standards Division, even if they meet each of the above qualifications.
