Job Title:Request for Consideration Sergeant, Highway and Bridge Safety Unit

Summary:

The MTA Police Department is seeking qualified members of the department from the rank of Sergeant who are interested in being considered for assignment in the Highway and Bridge Safety Unit. 

 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of a Highway and Bridge Safety Unit Sergeant includes but is not limited to:

    Manage and supervise the daily responsibilities of the Highway and Bridge Safety Unit.

   Manage daily administrative tasks including unit deployments, weekly payroll, reviewing reports, conducting supervisory investigations and making timely notifications to senior leadership.

    Supervise and coordinate special enforcement initiatives specific to designated MTA owned bridges, the congestion relief zone (CRZ) and other assignments including but not limited to, toll evasion enforcement, speed enforcement, commercial vehicle enforcement, railroad grade crossing enforcement, bus lane enforcement and other conditions specific to the MTA.

    Coordinate specialized police escorts for emergency circumstances, over dimensioned equipment, and other special events requiring the safe delivery of persons and assets.

    Coordinate and support initiatives to include the Police Traffic Services (PTS) Program, “STOP DWI” and the “Buckle Up New York” Campaign.

    Schedule, oversee and/or instruct training assignments for current and new members of the unit.

     Introduce and/or instruct innovative training topics for quarterly/monthly in-service training.

   Coordinate and supervise joint operations with partner law enforcement agencies, the special operations division units and MTA police patrol districts.

    Utilize statistics to enhance the efficient and expeditious flow of traffic for commuters utilizing the various transportation systems of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, including the Bridges and Tunnels, Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Railroad and NYCT Buses.

 

Qualifications:

Interested members must, at a minimum, possess the following qualifications/requirements to be considered for this position:

    Currently hold the rank of Sergeant within the MTA Police Department.

    Possess superior interpersonal communication skills for this specialized position.

    Possess above average vehicle and traffic law and accident investigation experience.

    Possess supervisory experience and confidence for a high paced enforcement environment.

•     Possess supervisory experience with conducting/reporting on department internal investigations.

     Possess knowledge and proficiency with the TraCS software and Integrated Justice Portal (e-Justice)

     Possess knowledge and proficiency with the departments Motorola and AXON license plate readers.

     Possess the willingness to participate in all specialized training assignments related to the various

       missions of the unit including police motorcycle operations and advanced enforcement proficiencies.

     Possess a willingness to obtain an instructor certification within 1-year of assignment into the unit.

     Possess a professional uniform appearance and conform to the uniform regulations of the unit.

  • Be willing to commit to three (3) years of service with the Highway and Bridge Safety Unit.

A Highway and Bridge Safety Unit Sergeant must possess the ability to work with:

          Local/State/Federal law enforcement agencies.

          Local/State/Federal governmental agencies.

          MTA Police Management.

          MTA customers, employees, and stakeholders.

Selected candidate for the Highway and Bridge Safety Unit Sergeant will be required to attend the MTAPD Highway and Bridge Safety Unit Training Program which includes proficiencies on various job-related assignments including extensive training on the department’s police motorcycles.

Candidates should understand that they are not guaranteed an assignment with the Highway and Bridge Safety Unit, even if they meet each of the above qualifications.

Additionally, candidates should understand that excessive sick occurrences or disciplinary history may disqualify them from sitting for a panel interview.
