Position Objective:

Assist in the supervision of the Grand Central Terminal (GCT) building maintenance crafts such as plumbers, sheet metal mechanics, machinist, wireman, carpenters, laborers, locksmith, elevator mechanics, teamsters (masons, painters & iron workers), that are responsible for maintaining GCT and related facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate the day-to-day priorities of the Building Maintenance crafts such as plumbers, sheet metal mechanics, machinist, wireman, carpenters, laborers, locksmiths, elevator mechanics, teamster (masons, painters & iron workers for all shifts
  • Manage coordination of crafts assigned to work on all construction projects, by establishing priorities, scheduling and adjusting staff to meet same.
  • Establish and monitor cyclical maintenance program for all equipment such as switch board house, electrical equipment, chillers, transformers, HVAC equipment, HP steam grid, and plumbing systems in GCT.
  • Manage and monitor safety programs (24/7), attendance, and training of all crafts, including improvement of workforce skills and keeping up with current technology end ensuring employees skills are up to date and consistent with the company standards.
  • Select, develop, and motivate staff and provide career development for team members. Provide effective coaching and counseling.  Manager team and individual performance.  Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables staff to develop and contribute to their full potential.

Required Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

 

  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively while under pressure with emergency situations on a 24 hour per day basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and write specifications for material requirements, services and supplies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and coordination skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels and external contacts.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to foster teamwork.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and establish priorities.
  • Knowledge of standard safety programs, policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and/or Access, or comparable applications as well as familiarity with preventive maintenance software programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to read blueprints and schematics and to prepare material take-offs, as well as perform field design work when required.
  • Self-motivated, resourceful and a team player that is flexible and goal oriented and can handle maintenance and repair problems that arise on a daily basis.
  • Knowledge and understanding of standard applicable building codes (i.e. plumbing, HVAC)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be available to be on call 24/7 as required.
  • Will be required to obtain OSHA 10 & 30 training and certificates within 12 months of placement in the position.

The Following is/are preferred:

  • Familiarity with the various craft collective bargaining agreements for personnel in GCT.
  • Thorough knowledge of Grand Central terminals’ physical characteristics including exits, stairways, elevators, escalators, etc.
  • Knowledge of Metro-North’s safety programs, policies and procedures (Safety record will be requested from Safety).
  • New York State code Enforcement Official (NYSCEO) certification.

Required Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.  Demonstrated equivalent experience, education and/or technical credentials may be considered in lieu of degree to include four (4) years of additional related experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience managing building operations and/or construction activities.
  • Two (2) years of experience managing a diverse workforce and/or project management.

Other Information

This position is safety-sensitive and subject to toxicological testing.

According to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).

Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
