JOB SUMMARY
HVAC TECHNICIANS service, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and install all Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), ice machines, refrigerators and water cooling systems within Grand Central Terminal.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include but are not limited to:
- Monitor the status of all HVAC components using computerized building management system.
- Perform regularly scheduled preventative maintenance (e.g., clean evaporators, check Freon levels, etc.) on HVAC systems and ductless units.
- Repair and replace defective equipment, components (e.g., controllers, temperature sensors, etc.) and wiring.
- Monitor, maintain and repair air handlers, fans and other related HVAC equipment.
- Test electrical circuits and components for continuity using electrical equipment (e.g., multimeters, meggers, etc.).
- Test pipes and connections for leaks using various test equipment and methods (e.g., electric leak detectors, soap and water, etc.).
- Install, connect and adjust thermostats, humidistats and timers.
- Connect heating and air conditioning equipment to Freon lines using brazing and flaring methods.
- Discuss heating or cooling concerns with users to isolate problems and to verify repairs corrected concerns.
- Review prints, wiring schematics and design specifications to ensure proper HVAC installation and to troubleshoot system malfunctions.
- Modify existing HVAC systems to improve efficiency and work in conjunction with other systems.
- Clean water cooling systems and ice machines to ensure proper system functionality.
- Complete work order logs to track and verify work performed.
- Read technical documents (i.e., operations and maintenance manuals) to troubleshoot system malfunctions and assist with maintenance and repairs.

- Skilled in using electrical and mechanical tools and meters.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).
- Graduation from a Vocational, Technical Training, or Trade school resulting in a degree or certificate in HVAC and/or refrigeration or
- Two (2) years of experience installing or repairing HVAC or refrigeration equipment.
- Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Certification.
The following is/are preferred:
- Completion of an HVAC or Refrigeration Apprenticeship.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be respirator qualified or able to become respirator qualified within 30 days or hire/transfer
- Must become and maintain roadway worker qualification
RATE OF PAY
The starting rate for this position is $32.16/hour (70% of the full rate). The annual wage progression scale is as follows:
Year 1 = 65%
Year 2= 70%
Year 3= 75%
Year 4= 80%
Year 5= 92%
Year 6= 100%
The 100% full rate of pay is $49.47/hour.
This salary is non-negotiable, based on the IBEW agreement
Accordingly, please be advised that the terms and conditions of employment for this position are subject to the collective bargaining agreement.
DETAILS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
Ability to regularly lift/carry/push/pull tools, material and equipment weighing up to 35 lbs. (e.g., tool bags/carts, refrigerant tanks, etc.) and occasionally weighing up to 65 lbs. (e.g., compact cooling units, compressors, etc.)
- Ability to climb onto ladders, scaffolding, lifts to inspect, install and repair HVAC equipment
- Ability to walk on uneven surfaces while navigating tracks and yard to access air-conditioned signal houses and other facilities located on or about the right-of-way
- Color vision is required to identify and distinguish colored wires found on equipment and transformers

Selection Criteria
Due to the competitive nature of the selection process, not all qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the position are guaranteed an interview. - Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration.
- Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union.
