Position Objective:

The purpose of this is to acquire the skills and abilities of a trainmaster to direct the safe, efficient, and economical performance of the Transportation Department in the assigned territories, ensuring that direct reports comply with all Metro-North Operating and Safety Rules.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the implementation of departmental safety initiatives and support inter-departmental safety goals and objectives under the direction of a more senior Transportation Field Supervisor.
  • Assist in the supervision of District and/or Line train and service delivery functions affecting on-time performance, reliability, cleanliness, comfort, courtesy, communications, and safety under the direction of a more senior Transportation Field Supervisor.
  • Assist with leading and facilitating the coordinated activities of inter-departmental management personnel related to service functions on a Line or in a District under the direction of a more senior Transportation Field Supervisor.
  • Instill safety-driven behaviors by fostering effective communication and modeling a supervisory style that demonstrates respect for people.
  • Observed and reported on compliance with all Operating and Safety Rules.
  • Assist in the direction and coordination of capital and maintenance work activities to ensure a consistently high level of service delivery under the direction of a more senior Transportation Field Supervisor.
  • Under the direction of a more senior Transportation Field Supervisor: Select, develop, and motivate staff and provide career development for team members. Provide effective coaching and counseling. Manage team and individual performance. Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables staff to develop and contribute to their full potential.

Required Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

 

  • Must be able to assess and correct problems in stressful situations with tight time constraints.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills to facilitate and execute coordinated inter-departmental service delivery.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and with outside agencies.
  • Must be able to work effectively with various Metro-North Operating Departments, Office of System Safety, contractors, personnel, as well as with outside agencies.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and /or comparable application.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends and to be on call seven days a week when required.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Required Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Business, Public Administration, or related field. Demonstrated equivalent education, experience, or technical credentials to include four (4) additional years of related experience may be considered in place of degree.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a transportation environment in an operations role. Prior quantifiable internship in a transportation environment may be considered as well.
  • The successful candidate must become qualified within six (6) months from the date of hire on Metro-North Railroad Operating Rules, Roadway Worker Safety Rules, and Air Brake and Train Handling Instructions.
  • Must become qualified on the physical characteristics of assigned line within six (6) months from placement in the position.

The following is/are preferred, but other satisfactory combinations of relevant experience, education, and/or technical credentials will be considered:

  • Familiarity with train equipment, crew assignments, train cycles, and equipment programs.
  • Knowledge of labor agreements.
  • Knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.

Other Information

This position is safety-sensitive and subject to toxicological testing.

According to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).

Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
