RESPONSIBILITIES:
CARMEN are responsible for maintaining, inspecting, repairing and modifying mechanical equipment on rail rolling stock.
THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Inspects, maintains, and repairs car body components on all rail rolling stock. including but not limited to: car body Interior and exterior, seats, floors, windows, windshields, trucks, and wheels
- Installs all carbody glazing (windows) on rail rolling stock.
- Performs periodic visual inspections of train components in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations to repair or replace any defective or worn mechanical parts
- Items inspected and repaired on the rolling stock include but are not limited to safety devices, wheels, truck components, traction mechanisms, etc.
- Operates support equipment (e.g., crane, car and truck hoists, truck movers, etc.) while performing inspections, repairs, and maintenance as needed
- Inspects, repairs, and maintains air brake systems on passenger equipment to include pneumatic operating units, valves, and car suspensions
- Installs mechanical train car modifications in accordance with manufacturer specifications and instructions
- Applies paint stenciling, lettering, and train decals on car bodies in accordance with American Association of Railroads and to meet Federal Railroad Administration's Code of Federal Regulations
- Completes required information tracking and documents to comply with Metro-North, State and Federal requirements
- Performs welding on components and equipment related to passenger rolling stock.
- References written documents (e.g. operating or manufacturing manuals) while troubleshooting or maintaining equipment
- Performs other duties as assigned
TRAINING:
- Must successfully complete Metro-North Carman training program to qualify for position.
- Training includes classroom instruction and on-the-job-training
- Additional training may be required for consideration of specialized Carman positions
Qualifications:
- Must have High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) AND
- Completion of vocation or apprentice training as a Machinist or Mechanic OR two years of experience as a Mechanic (building maintenance - generators, automotive mechanic, aircraft and submarines, etc.) or Carpenter (wood working or cabinetry etc.)
PREFERRED:
- Prior experience repairing, installing, or maintaining heavy equipment such as automobiles or aircrafts
- Familiarity with the basic operation of mechanical equipment and how components work in conjunction with each other
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Burning and/or welding qualifications required for certain C, D, E, and F-Rate positions
- Must become and maintain Qualified Maintenance Personnel (QMP) qualification
- Hearing conservation may be needed for some positions
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

- Skilled in exercising independent judgment; Ability to anticipate and analyze problems and take corrective actions

- Mechanical aptitude; knowledge of hand tools and power tools and their appropriate use;
- Ability to work in teams; ability to follow instructions; attention to detail; ability to troubleshoot mechanical errors and take corrective action
- Problem solving skills; ability and willingness to learn and operating and safety rules
- Familiarity with schematics, and diagrams
Rate of Pay
For the duration of the training program, approximately (5) months, the rate of pay is as follows: $21.96
Once graduated from the training program, the annual wage progression scale is as follows: Year 1= $27.82 > Year 2= $27.82 > Year 3= $29.81 > Year 4= $32.59 > Year 5= $33.78 > Year 6= $39.75
This salary is non-negotiable, based on the TWU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
An exception may be granted for a journeyman rate to anyone who:
- Possesses a minimum of (4) years of experience performing verifiable mechanic's work.
Seniority
New employees will establish seniority in the Transportation Workers Union (TWU), the union representing Carmen, in accordance with the union's current collective bargaining agreement.
Members of TWU are subject to an initiation fee and monthly membership dues.
Assignments
Must be able and willing to work various shifts, Metro-North locations, and days.
OTHER INFORMATION:
This is a federally regulated position subject to both pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.
As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $108,638.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker.
Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
DETAILS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
- Must be able to lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to climb ladders and steps to board equipment
- Crouching, crawling, and maneuvering in tight areas to maintain passenger seats and equipment
- Talking and hearing ability required to communicate with coworkers and supervisors
DETAILS OF WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to work on trains inside various maintenance shops, and in the yard and on tracks during inclement weather
- Exposed to hazmat material such as: WD-40 and traction motor lubricant on mechanical components glue and rubbing alcohol for removing frayed or damaged train decals Works in close proximity of moving equipment
- Works at heights up to 15 ft. from the ground while performing work on top of elevated train trucks
