Responsibilities:
Using dedicated pre-press software (Flighcheck, Preps, Acrobat, Pitstop Professional, Xitron Xenith RIPManager Client, EFI Colorproof XF client), and utilizing standard desktop publishing software applications (QuarkXpress, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), implement press layouts and book impositions in various sheet sizes for the print shop's presses. Preview and analyze complex, computer-generated graphics files in both native and PDF format for spreads, shrinks, traps, color percentage values, and produce corresponding CTP (computer-to-plate) and digital output files for print production, either traditional offset or digital press. Also design and implement workflow for such projects within the prepress unit; serve as a liaison with outside vendors regarding special trapping/output issues on farmed out jobs, to facilitate project production on press. Using appropriate software, set up and apply colorbars to print jobs according to SWOP (Standard Web Offset Printing) color guidelines, maintaining SWOP standard throughout workflow. Output proofs to HP 5500 or Epson StylusPRO 7800 large-format printers through EFI (Electronics for Imaging) workflow. Will need to be able to profile RIPS to create press curves. Also design and produce internal (print shop) forms.
Troubleshoot improperly prepared or corrupt files, implementing software-based solutions where appropriate, including UCR (Under-Color removal), color correction of files and images, color space conversions (RGB to CMYK). Design and implement desktop publishing software guidelines for proper file preparation by graphic artists.
Troubleshoot workflow problems and implement software-based corrective steps, seeking vendor assistance if necessary.
Maintain supply inventory, monitor, troubleshoot, and coordinate maintenance of departmental prepress equipment (e.g.: Presstek D425 platesetter, Presstek Anthem plate washer, Xitron Xenith RIP [residing on separate computer], Apple G5 PowerPC computers, Xanté Accel-a-Writer 4G desktop printer, Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL desktop scanner). Optimize functionality of prepress software; analyze/assess software and equipment need and make recommendations.
Education and Experience:
- Five (5) years of recent satisfactory, full-time experience as a pre-press combo operator; OR
- An Associate of Arts Degree in Printing Technology plus three (3) years of recent satisfactory full-time experience as a pre-press combo operator; OR
- Two (2) years of printing press experience and three (3) years of recent satisfactory, Lithographic/Electronic pre-press combo operator work using desktop publishing and complex graphics software; OR
- Two (2) years of printing press experience and three (3) years full-time work as a pre-press combo operator.
Desired Skills:
Candidate must possess five years of experience in an active Print Shop pre-press environment. A general knowledge of offset printing is compulsory. The candidate must be capable of following layouts/instructions and purposing jobs to their proper destination and must be able to work independently. Must be familiar with PDF workflow.
