SUMMARY

The MTA Police Department is seeking qualified members from the rank of Sergeant who are interested in being assigned to the Technical & Aerial Support Unit.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise, coordinate, and oversee the daily operations and personnel assigned to the Technical & Aerial Support Unit (TASU), ensuring mission readiness, operational effectiveness, and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and departmental regulations.
• Plan, coordinate, and direct UAS operations throughout the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Area of Responsibility (AOR), ensuring missions are conducted safely, efficiently, and in support of law enforcement, emergency response, critical infrastructure protection, and public safety objectives.
• Supervise and coordinate operational support during active incidents by ensuring timely, accurate, and actionable intelligence, aerial imagery, and situational awareness are provided to supervisory and command personnel to support informed decision-making.
• Supervise the maintenance of accurate, complete, and auditable records of all TASU activities, including flight logs, maintenance documentation, training records, equipment inventories, operational reports, and regulatory compliance documentation.
• Monitor program performance by identifying operational trends, evaluating mission outcomes, and recommending improvements to enhance efficiency and safety.
• Assign personnel, prioritize operational requests, and manage team resources to ensure effective response to routine operations, emergency incidents, planned events, and special assignments.
• Perform related supervisory and administrative duties as assigned in support of departmental goals, strategic initiatives, and public safety objectives.
• Maintain all required certifications and qualifications necessary to operate departmental unmanned aerial systems and be willing to personally conduct flight operations to support emergency incidents, planned events, training exercises, and other operational missions as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Interested members must, at a minimum, possess the following qualifications to be considered for this position:

• Two (2) years of Supervisory experience at the rank of Sergeant with the MTA Police Department at the time of application. Candidate must not be on probation of any kind.              
• Must possess a valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate at the time of application. 
• Must sign a confidentiality notice and non-disclosure agreement.
• Ability to successfully complete a department-sponsored UAS Operator’s course. Candidates who do not meet the required standards will be subject to reassignment out of the unit. 
• Prior completion of a UAS Operator’s course is preferred, with demonstrated knowledge of UAS operations, safety protocols, and applicable regulatory requirements considered an asset.
• Prior experience operating unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is preferred, with demonstrated proficiency in flight operations, safety procedures, mission execution, and basic troubleshooting considered an asset.
• Must maintain required certifications throughout the assignment in the unit. 
• Ability to work and complete assignments with limited supervision.
• Candidates who have recent substantiated discipline/suspension or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism not related to sickness or work injury may be removed from interview consideration. 
• Candidates cannot be designated Chronic Sick or be designated Doctor Certified with more than one occurrence. 
• Successful completion of the panel interview.
