Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles – from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.

JOB SUMMARY:
Assist in the managing, planning, developing, and evaluating of project and maintenance requirements within the Engineering Department; this position is responsible for the handling and completion of all material and contract related tasks assigned in the following disciplines: Communications, Signal, Structures, and Track. The incumbent may be required to handle tasks related to any number of these disciplines at one time. Responsible for assisting in the development and preparation of requisitions, ensuring all materials are procured in accordance with the overall production schedules, and ensuring that forces have adequate resources for the work at hand, including emergency conditions. Oversee the management of blanket order purchases. Process and track material charge outs. Participate in annual inventories in material yards throughout the LIRR’s property, perform material inspections at various outlying points upon delivery. Oversee the MW (Maintenance of Way) Repair Shop Inventory and Storeroom Facility. Maintain records on all tools and equipment, including rental equipment. Maintain Valuable Metals (VM) Usage Files.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in developing and managing annual maintenance and projects planning requirements based upon database requirements and needs to ensure conformance to project budget task limitations, LIRR Capital policies, Operating Funded Capital (OFC), Department of Transportation (DOT), Individuals & Companies (I&C), maintenance procedures and/or budget allowances.
- Assist in managing and ensuring that all resource requirements are progressed and expedited through Purchasing, including the timely processing of bid package reviews and recommendation for award. Reports and expedites critical materials on a weekly basis using database.
- Assist in managing tool & equipment inventories as per Corporate Guidelines and control mandates.
- Assist in managing and overseeing material staging areas and support staff.
- Assist in managing the collection and accumulation of all field charge outs to ensure maintenance and operating projects operate in accordance with the work manifested. Costs are within the approved budgeted task.
- Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to guidelines of company safety policies and procedures. Lead by example.
- Perform other assignments as requested by Senior Management.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in business or related field. An additional four years of demonstrated, directly related, equivalent experience and education may be considered in lieu of the degree.
- Two years of related experience, specifically in positions with increased responsibility in related material management.
- Must be able to analyze overall project schedules and develop specific material delivery requirements.
- Must possess knowledge of the computerized material management systems, specifically PeopleSoft, Maximo, LIMS, and Access Database.
- Must possess demonstrated leadership skills.
- Must possess strong written and oral communication skills.
- Must possess strong human relations skills coupled with professional demeanor and a high degree of integrity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of the Engineering Department, with an understanding of the special needs associated with each operating group’s material requirements and familiarity with Engineering Department operations in maintenance and construction.
- Knowledge of LIRR financial practice and understanding of procurement process.

OTHER INFORMATION:
- Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company’s discretion.
- Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

- LIRR: In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make-up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.
