JOB SUMMARY

Construct, repair, assemble, and install finished work (cabinets, doors, crown molding, drop ceilings, etc.) throughout Grand Central Terminal
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•         Perform high-quality finished work in the construction, repair, assembly, and installation of cabinets, custom shelving, furniture, doors, crown molding, and other wooden structures using woodworking machines and hand tools

•         Fabricate, lay out, assemble, frame, and install metal and wood stud walls, doors, door jambs, cabinets, high-grade furniture, and window frames

•         Install and repair sheetrock

•         Install Formica countertops and drop ceilings

•         Construct forms for concrete installation

•         Lay out and install vinyl and carpet tile floors

•         •Install prefabricated office workstations

•         •Read and understand blueprints

•         Verify dimensions and check the quality and fit of pieces to ensure adherence to

•         Specifications

•         Measure and mark dimensions on paper or lumber stock before cutting, following blueprints,

•         to ensure a tight fit and quality product

•         Set up and operate carpentry shop machines (e.g., power saws, jointers, mortisers,

•         tenoners, molders, shapers, planes, etc.) to cut, mold and shape woodstock 

•         Establish the specifications of articles to be constructed or repaired and plan the method and

•         operation for shaping and assembling parts, based on blueprints, drawings, diagrams and

•         oral and written instructions

•         Attach parts or subassemblies together to form completed units, using glue, dowels, nails,

•         screws and clamps

•         Reinforce joints with nails and other fasteners to prepare articles for finishing

•         • Install hardware (e.g., hinges, handles, catches and drawer pull using hand tools

•         Trim, sand, and scrape surfaces and joints to prepare articles for finishing

•         Match materials for color, grain, and texture, giving attention to knots or other features of the wood

•         Performs other duties as assigned

•         Ability to quickly and accurately perform basic mental mathematical calculations; reading comprehension ability; interpersonal skills; customer service oriented; mechanical aptitude; skilled in exercising independent judgment; ability to anticipate and analyze problems and take corrective actions; must be able to evaluate a situation to make decisions and work under pressure; written and verbal communication skills; ability to multi-task; must be able to function effectively under changing priorities; ability to work well with others; must be safety conscious.

•         Ability and experience using table saw, jointer, power saw, and screw gun; ability and experience using drill press, and planer desirable; very strong attention to detail and quality craftsmanship; strong planning skills with the ability to improvise based on conditions encountered; skilled in operating common powered and manual woodworking tools (e.g., power saws and drills, router tables, jigsaws, planes, chisels, etc.)

 

          REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Must have High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma or Test Assessing

Secondary Completion (TASC) and

• Vocational or apprentice training as a Cabinetmaker or finished Carpenter or

• Two (2) years of experience performing finished carpentry (e.g., building cabinets, fabricating

and installing crown moldings, wainscoting, custom shelving, finished furniture, etc.)

The following is/are preferred: 

  • Valid Driver’s License or equivalent

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must complete Metro-North respirator training and certification within 30 days of
  • Must complete Metro-North fall protection certification
  • Must provide appropriate hand tools for job)

RATE OF PAY

The starting rate for this position is $31.49/hour (70% of the full rate). The annual wage progression scale is as follows: 

 

Year 1 & 2= 70%

Year 3= 75%

Year 4= 82%

Year 5 = 85%

Year 6= 100%

 

The 100% full rate of pay is $44.98/hour.     

 

This salary is non-negotiable, based on the Transport Workers Union (TWU)

 

 

SENIORITY

Applicants will establish seniority in the Transport Workers Union (TWU), the union representing Cabinet Makers, in accordance with the union's current collective bargaining agreement.

 

Members of TWU are subject to an initiation fee and monthly membership dues.

 

 

DETAILS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:     • Ability to stand and maintain balance is required • Pushing and pulling ability required (pushing carts, pushing wood through shaper, etc.) • Ability to climb onto ladders, scaffolding, lifts to perform work • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces while navigating tracks and yard to access work locations • Ability to regularly lift/carry tools, material and equipment weighing up to 30 lbs. (e.g., tool bags/carts, ladders, etc.)

Selection Criteria

Due to the competitive nature of the selection process, not all qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the position are guaranteed an interview. This is a safety sensitive position and subject to toxicology testing.

Employees driving company vehicles will be subject to License Monitoring and must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

 

Additional Criteria for Current Employees:

  • Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration.
  • Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union.
  • Non-agreement employees must have worked in their current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
