Hourly Rate:                     $19.00 (Undergraduate)
 
All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.
 
 
OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:
Work Car Engineering (WCE) provides technical support for Subways' fleet of work cars from inception through development until the retirement of the fleet. WCE develops the Technical Specifications upon which a car builder designs and produces new work cars.  WCE manages the contractor through the various phases of production including Qualification and Acceptance Testing.  WCE also aides in analyzing and resolving technical issues discovered post warranty. 
The intern will review engineering documents for technical correctness.  The intern will assist with qualification and acceptance testing and implementation of field modifications. The intern will also monitor the car builder's repair work during the warranty period.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review and analyze technical specifications, for electrical systems related to subway operations, including trainline systems, power distribution, signaling interfaces, and communication equipment.
  • Develop detailed technical responses correspondence to vendors, contractors, and consultants.
  • Maintain and manage a comprehensive correspondence and documentation tracking system to ensure timely responses, version control, and alignment with project milestones.
  • Witness and evaluate qualification testing of electrical components and systems to ensure compliance with NYCT requirements, industry standards, and safety regulations.
  • Witness factory and field acceptance testing of electrical equipment, verifying functionality, performance, and integration with existing subway infrastructure.
  • Monitor and coordinate the activities of contractors and consultants to ensure adherence to project specifications, electrical codes, safety protocols, and construction schedules.
  • Witness the installation, integration, and commissioning of trainline kits and associated electrical systems on rolling stock and within subway environments.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, inspection summaries, and status updates documenting project progress, test results, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional NYCT teams (signals, power, and operations) to ensure seamless system integration and minimal service disruption.

  • Flat Car Warranty.
  • Pump Train Acceptance Testing.
  • Vacuum Train Closeout.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills. 
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.
 
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA. 
  • Major(s) Preferred: Electrical Engineering, or related field.
