Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles – from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible to support the Supervisor to plan, lead, and coordinate the work of employees in their daily assignments. He/she is responsible for the safe and economical use of available labor, materials, and equipment.  In addition, an Assistant Supervisor is required to enforce company policy, Local, State and Federal mandated Rules and Regulations.  This position is also responsible for the safety and well-being of all employees under his/her jurisdiction. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the planning, monitoring, and the coordination of construction, maintenance and plumbing activities ensuring safe, cost effective, high quality performance, including field supervision. 
  • Assume Structures Supervisor's responsibilities as needed for short-term coverage.
  • Enforce provision of Labor Agreements ensuring communication of same to employees.
  • Provide technical support to Structures Forces.
  • Work with other LIRR Departments on Joint Ventures.
  • Lead Safety Meetings as per policy; conduct regular Safety Audits.
  • Investigate on-the-job accidents for cause, prevention and remedial action
  • Investigate structural and plumbing failures, resulting in train delays or loss of facilities, for causes and future prevention.
  • Take all necessary steps to maintain safe, reliable Train Service including availability for 'callouts' and to restore interrupted service and vital systems in the most effective manner.
  • Administer testing and evaluations for new employees.
  • Review individual employee attendance records and expense accounts, to ensure conformance with Company Policies.
  • Review time and payroll reports for accuracy.
  • Monitor materials usage and material reports to ensure proper inventory control.
  • Review Vehicle Fleet records for accuracy and usage.
  • Conduct training sessions on technical and safety issues as required.
  • Attend Company meetings as required.
  • Other assigned duties.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess one of the following three:
    • 1. Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and two years engineering/railroad related experience. OR
    • 2. Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline and successful standing in the Jr. Engineer Program. OR
    • 3. Approximately 5 years Structures experience with experience in a leadership capacity including general awareness of applicable industry codes and standards. 
  • Must demonstrate willingness to assume and handle responsibility. 
  • Must possess proficient computer skills. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skill, and interpersonal skills.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company’s discretion.
  • Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

  • LIRR: In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make-up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.  Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety-sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
