LOCATION: Queens
REPORTS TO: Senior Manager Utilities
HOURS OF WORK: 8-hour workday

SUMMARY:
This position is responsible to assist in the accounting, reconciliation and reporting of the Long Island Rail Road Utility Department. Develop and maintain report databases and prepare various reports for distribution to management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Receive, audit and process monthly invoices (Electric, Water, Steam, Diesel, Heating).
- Assist in the month-end and annual accounting close. Prepare general ledger monthly account analysis. Determine/resolve discrepancies and prepare adjusting journal entries as necessary.
- Interact with the MTA Business Service Center to monitor cost, indicate corrections, and confirm billing corrections applied to the general ledger.
- Create and distribute monthly energy consumption reports.
- Work with utility vendors to address estimated & problematic accounts.
- Monthly account analysis (budget vs actual).
- Prepare budgets for all utilities with accompanying written explanations of how the budget estimates were determined.
- Enter budget information into Financial Management Systems.
- Provide assistance with the MTA agency-wide implementation of the Energy Management System.
- Evaluate and confirm the accuracy of the data in the EMS system, attend meetings and provide suggestions on how to utilize the system for better analysis and potentially identify utility savings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of accounting systems and procedures. (I.e. PeopleSoft).
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Access, Excel - use of pivot tables & v-lookups, Word and PowerPoint).
- Excellent quantitative, analytic, and deductive reasoning capabilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of management and external contacts.
- Strong ability to take control of assigned tasks with limited supervision.
- Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Strong ability to prepare accurate work papers, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Accounting Analyst
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or related field.
- 1-3 years accounting, finance or similar experience including database management and reporting; along with financial analysis and reconciliations.
Preferred:
- Previous experience working with utilities/energy
- Knowledge of accounting and revenue processes and systems.
- Experience working with Energy Management System Databases
Senior Accounting Analyst
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or related field.
- Minimum of four years accounting, finance or similar experience including database management and reporting; along with financial analysis and reconciliations.
Preferred:
- Previous experience working with utilities/energy.
- Knowledge of accounting and revenue processes and systems.
- Experience working with Energy Management System Databases
