Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles – from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for climbing poles up to 90 ft., with gaffs and belts; installing transformers and cross arms; working in underground spaces to splice cables and disconnect switches; lift and carry heavy components for installation; study each month's materials and complete homework assignments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing and able to obtain a Class 3 driver's license.
- Must pass an initial 10-day intensive program for pole climbing and demonstrate the ability to climb 70 ft. poles.
- Demonstrated ability to give as well as receive and understand written and oral instructions.
- Demonstrated capability and willingness to climb poles up to 90 ft.
PREFERRED:
- Prior electrical training.
- Prior pole/tree climbing/working at heights experience.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
- Exams will be given on each lesson, a passing grade must be achieved.
- Failure of 3 lessons in the three-year training period is grounds for dismissal.
- Final exam will be administered; if candidate fails exam, there will be one opportunity for re-examination.
- Yearly Practical Evaluation Exams will be administered; if the candidate fails the exam, there will be one opportunity for re-examination.
Training Program is two parts:
Part 1: Physical Characteristics (location of all high tension feeders, substations, etc.).
Part 2: Electrical theory and cable splicing training.
Part 2: Electrical theory and cable splicing training.

New hire candidates who meet one (1) or more of the criteria as enumerated below will qualify for the expedited wage progression for Journeymen:
- Four (4) years of full-time experience as an electrical worker, including the following jobs and titles and industries:
- Electrical, Electronics or Communications Worker in the Armed Forces
- Electrician, including commercial, residential, and low voltage
- Utility or Power Plant Electrical Worker
- Electronics, Communications or Computer Technician/Engineer
- Electrical Apprentice or Electrical Helper
- Automotive Electronic Technician, with ASE certification.
- Possess or completion of the following educational degrees, apprenticeships or trade program certifications, with required practical work experience accompanied thereto for a total of four (4) years:
- A four (4) year bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or associated Electrical field from an accredited college or university.
- A two (2) year associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or associated Electrical field from an accredited college plus two years of full-time experience performing electrical work.
- A trade (vocational) school certificate in Electrical Technology or associated electrical field, of which completion requires at least one (1) year of classroom training; plus
- Three (3) years of full-time experience as an electrical worker.
- Completion of at least four (4) years’ of an Electrical Apprenticeship Program.
- Completion of at least two (2) years of a full-time Electrical Apprenticeship Program, plus
- Two (2) years of full-time experience as an electrical worker.
For candidates who are being considered for positions as Linesmen in the Power Department, a candidate will qualify as a Journeyman with the additional following period experience:
- Combination of experience in trade school, performing electrical work and climbing, including both pole climbing and/or tree cutting. The total combined experience must meet the four (4) years’ of experience outlined above.
- Successful completion of the full training program provided by the Lineman Institute of the North East or a directly comparable program.

OTHER INFORMATION:
- Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company’s discretion.
- Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

- LIRR: In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make-up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.
