The Program / Department / Team

Mercy Corps alleviates poverty, suffering, and oppression and works to build secure, productive, and just communities in over 40 countries around the world. The Corporate Accounting, Payroll, Timekeeping, and Travel Departments perform vital functions for Mercy Corps globally. These groups interact with all other departmental functions and separate entities of the Agency, providing meaningful financial information to employees, management, donors, and regulators; processing global pay and vendor payments; and enabling team member travel. Corporate Accounting includes all consolidated accounting, headquarters accounts payable, annual global external audits and global consolidated financial reporting. The Corporate Accounting Department works closely with the Treasury and International Finance Departments in consolidating field information to provide monthly consolidation of over 40 country ledgers. Payroll and timekeeping are responsible for processing and allocating pay for all US based and Expat team members. Global Travel is responsible for the management and strategic development of Mercy Corps travel program.

The Position

The Senior Technical Accountant will support the optimization of the accounting functions at Mercy Corps Global Headquarters. The role is responsible for supporting the Agency’s compliance with accounting standards. 

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Assists with the research, interpretation and adoption of new accounting standards and amendments. Prepares technical accounting memos, as needed.
  • Assists with application of US GAAP for major transactions and separate legal entities. 
  • Performs research to evaluate and compare accounting standards from other jurisdictions (ex. IFRS) with US GAAP.
  • Prepares and supports required technical accounting and tax work papers as required. 
  • Responsible for performing various accounting functions as assigned in accordance with internal controls, procedures and policies of the accounting department.
  • Manages and supports subsidiary entity ledgers and post-closing accounting.
  • Serves as backup for routine balance sheet accounting entries.
  • Backfills for accounting positions through routine review of documentation and supports the implementation of new system integrations.
  • Assists in developing accounting and finance policies consistent with US GAAP.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

CAPACITY BUILDING

  • Support the performance and personal development of Corporate Accounting team members.
  • Represent Mercy Corps in a professional capacity at related organization events.

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • BA/BS in accounting with an active CPA license is required.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience is required, public accounting experience preferred. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of US GAAP (not for profit experience preferred), accounting systems and accounting software is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to research technical accounting issues is required. 
  • Strong Microsoft Office product skills are required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Demonstrated capability in working collaboratively.

Success Factors

A successful Senior Technical Accountant will be a team player and employ effective management skills, manage priorities, and work with a wide variety of individuals including international staff. Additionally, the Senior Technical Accountant will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and be able to communicate financial information in a succinct, organized manner. Living Conditions/ Environmental Conditions

This position is located at our US Headquarters based in Portland, OR. There is no relocation allowance available for this position.

Mercy Corps team members represent the agency both during and outside work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/short term assignment to a field posting. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
