The Chief of Staff to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is a senior position at Mercy Corps that requires managing a demanding set of responsibilities. Confidentiality and professionalism is highly important to the role. This role requires adaptability, loyalty, a strong sense of urgency, commitment, and the ability to manage highly sensitive situations and information. This is a management job with both direct reports and the requirement to manage others informally across the organization. This is a high-profile position requiring an individual with advanced writing, communicating and interpersonal skills and the ability to work quickly on deadlines. The Chief of Staff will work closely with all of the Executives, field teams, the Policy and Advocacy, Resource Development and other teams as necessary.
● Diplomatically represent Mercy Corps and CEO internally and externally.
● Independently manage extensive high-level communications with a wide range of contacts on behalf of the CEO and responsible for follow-up decision making on an array of issues, coordinating as needed with the Executive Team and senior leadership.
● Work with the CEO to prepare her for external engagements and internal communications, including livestream videos and all-Agency emails.
● Oversee the planning, coordination and facilitation of VIP visits and meetings involving the CEO.
● Oversee and ensure effective functioning of the CEO’s support team comprising the Executive Assistant to the CEO and Board Liaison.
● Work with teams to ensure the timely preparation for the Executive Team meetings and manage the follow-up on Executive Team meeting decisions and action items.
● Work with executives, the board liaison and others to ensure the timely preparation of materials for the Board meetings.
● Assess inquiries directed to the CEO, determine the proper course of action and delegate as appropriate or manage directly.
● Responsible for CEO budget oversight with budget approval authority for CEO’s direct reports.
● Track the progress of complex projects and deliverables for the CEO.
Direct Reports: Manages the Executive Assistant to the CEO, and the Board Liaison
Reports Directly To: Chief Executive Officer
Works Directly With: The Executive Team, the Vice President for Communications, the Resource Development team, the Policy and Advocacy team, internal communications, strategy, the program team, and others.
Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders
Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.
Experience & Transferable Skills
● Extensive experience supporting high-level executives or senior officials.
● Deep knowledge of both the external debates in the humanitarian and development sector and the internal Mercy Corps field work.
● Leadership and stature within the organization, including excellent relationships across field and headquarter teams.
● Familiarity with trends in the humanitarian, development, policy and media sectors.
● Excellent interpersonal and management skills.
● Ability to problem solve in stressful or emergency situations.
● Superior writing and editing skills.

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions
The position is based in Washington DC and may require limited travel to other HQ offices or internationally where living conditions may be exceptionally rugged or be in volatile environments where security protocols will need to be followed.
