What We’re Looking For:

 

Meltwater is seeking an experienced and self-motivated Senior Legal Counsel located in Shanghai, Hong Kong, or Singapore to join our team in APAC. 

 

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in supporting the business by providing legal guidance in the form of actionable advice across Greater China and other APAC regions that can be swiftly incorporated into risk-based, commercial decisions. Your responsibilities will include advising on a broad range of commercial, corporate, and compliance matters, managing contractual negotiations, and ensuring that legal risks are identified and mitigated effectively. As a trusted business partner and self-starter, you will quickly establish yourself within our dynamic global Legal team. The position will report to the Head of Legal in APAC.

What You’ll Do:

 

  • Work with a high degree of autonomy to draft, review and negotiate a diverse range of legal contracts with customers, partners, or vendors such as subscription contracts, partner contracts, content licensing contracts, marketing contracts, data privacy agreements, and other legal documentation as required by the APAC business and entities, while collaborating with and receiving guidance from the broader legal team as needed.
  • Partner closely with sales, deal desk, and product teams to structure agreements that balance legal risk and business objectives.
  • Act as a trusted advisor by providing effective and strategic legal counsel to various internal stakeholders (including management) and their teams in APAC (with special focus on Greater China and Hong Kong).
  • Provide strong leadership and proactive partnership to the business in Greater China and Hong Kong, deliver legal advice with deep understanding of strategy, key customers, industry environment drivers as well as proactively address issues faced and opportunities presented to the businesses.
  • Proactively monitor upcoming laws and regulations in Greater China and Hong Kong, participate in advocacy around relevant laws/regulations that impact the company, provide early strategic advice in anticipation of changes.
  • Provide legal support for corporate governance matters in Hong Kong and Greater China (including managing governmental or quasi-governmental inquiries).
  • Design and execute legal training programs tailored to business needs and legal environment.
  • Effectively manage the work and expense of external law firms, if required.

 

What You’ll Bring:

 

  • LL.B. from a leading university in China, Singapore, or Hong Kong.
  • LL.M or JD from accredited United States law school is a plus.
  • Admitted to practice law with a current legal practitioner's certificate.
  • Minimum of 6 years of professional legal experience, including in law firms and in-house. 
  • Experience in supporting  commercial transactions in a multinational SaaS company is a must.
  • Expertise in complex contract negotiations and managing commercial transactions and deals.
  • Results oriented, displays sound judgment and ability to balance business considerations and gets results while maintaining effective business relationships with varied constituencies.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and managing difficult conversations with highly motivated sellers and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide excellent, timely legal guidance in a fast-paced and high-volume transactional environment in a quickly evolving business. Enjoys the challenge of unfamiliar tasks and projects.
  • Quick learner who can handle multiple projects simultaneously and work well both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Mandarin. Is able to communicate clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles.  
  • Japanese language skills are a plus. 
  • High degree of discretion and judgment; absolute confidentiality and integrity.
  • Understands how to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines. Proactive and reliable.
  • Willingness to embrace the best of both worlds with our hybrid work schedule. This role requires you to occasionally work from the office.
  • The ability to legally work in the country of hire is required for this position.
