We are looking for: Ophthalmology Veterinary Assistant
The Ophthalmology team is unique in that it specializes in appointment-based patient care, as well as assisting and preparing for surgeries. Ophthalmology is a fast-paced service with a high caseload, alternating between appointment and surgery days. You could assist with tonometry, corneal stains, Schirmer tear testing, as well as TPRs and chemical ablations.
What you’ll do:
- Prioritize caseload and patient care and prepare and check charts for appropriate paperwork
- Obtain vitals and perform ocular testing
- Assist with surgical procedures
- Prepare, call in or create written prescriptions
- Knowledge of various routes of drug administration and ability to calculate and administer injections and fluids.
- Anesthesia monitoring (placing monitoring equipment, understanding and ability to evaluate values, manually monitor patient if necessary).
- Pre/Post-Surgical patient care and patient recovery.
- Maintaining surgical OR, equipment and instruments including cleaning, wrapping, sterilizing and organizing.
- Perform client call backs.
Who are you:
- High school diploma of equivalent
- Prior veterinary experience required, previous ophthalmology experience desired
- Proficient in calculations (drugs, constant rate infusions, unit conversions, etc.)
- Flexibility with work hours and able to work additional hours when necessary
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Critical thinking skills and ability to anticipate needs inter & intra-departmentally
- Ability to stay on task and work energetically for entire shift, sometimes up to 10 hours per day
- Eager to learn more about diseases and medication specific to ophthalmology
- Mandatory Rotational on call
