Responsible for setting vision, direction and strategy for the Technical Services team.
The VP Technical Services is responsible for coordinating all aspects of a product or service offering, planning and running client sponsored development projects that fall outside the scope of core Medidata platform. He or she is responsible for ensuring that the service offerings meet customer requirements and must also maintain high levels of team utilization and profitability. This individual will also play a key role in ensuring that internal Medidata infrastructure relating to knowledge management and technical skill are optimised to support the whole Technical Services organisation.
Areas of Responsibility and Demonstrate the ability to:
Lead the Technical Services team to effectively support Professional Services in all Technical Services areas such as report writing, custom functions, etc, and develop strategy to continue to meet internal and external client needs and timelines.
Support the team to design new custom solutions, build around processes and technology and develop novel approaches in the use and customisation of Medidata platform and other applications to support customer needs. This may include the creation of additional Technical Services offerings to drive additional revenue.
Devise, prepare, deliver and maintain the infrastructure to ensure all employees receive training, development, and coaching in technical knowledge required by Technical Services to deliver the service offerings
Ensure the internal Medidata technical infrastructure is optimised for the whole of Technical Services to support the delivery of service offerings, working closely with other Medidata teams e.g. Service Delivery, Enterprise Support so internal infrastructure does not impact delivery. Foster strong relationships with internal teams
Manage resources to support offerings around all Medidata products and services and proactively plan for future needs by ensuring resources are developed to continue to meet the needs of our customers
Manage a global resource base, including an off-shore team in India. Collaborate and foster strong relationship with these global resources and off-shore teams, ensure their performance is meeting needs and metrics of team
Oversee 3rd party contracts if required.
Manage, coach, develop and mentor direct reports (i.e., hires, trains, appraises rewards, motivates, disciplines, creates Performance Improvement Plans, recommends termination as necessary, etc.). Define team and individual goals that are in line with Department/Divisional goals
Collaborate as an active team member with other product and services departments, as well as Sales, Finance, People Team and Product Development as necessary.
Work on significant issues where you must feel comfortable analyzing data and evaluating intangibles and being able to set strategy and direction in this environment
Participate in rapid implementation process for expedited technical solution deployments which may include incorporating other products and services within or external to Medidata
Work with the team to achieve time frames for all active projects and within financial guidelines supported by the creation and reporting of relevant metrics. Proactively strategize how metrics can be improved.
Master the Medidata Implementation Processes, SOP’s and WI’s.
Demonstrate responsibility for policies and procedures within the specific area of responsibility within Technical Services team and improving processes to ensure quality and timely delivery
Monitor and enforce best practices and consistency with delivery tasks within specific area of responsibility.
Work with clients in a client facing role, communicate with customers to assess customer satisfaction level with Technical Services solutions..
Participate in direct customer and sales support as necessary turning ideas and initiatives into tangible results for both internal and external customers.
Ensure team is able to provide cost estimates for customer-requested development projects and manage the requirements gathering process within specific area of responsibility
Ability to act independently, and proven track record of driving strategic initiatives, building and fostering internal and external networks and collaborative effectively cross functionally to drive results.
Your Education & Experience:
A minimum of 10+ years of experience in managing complex software implementations (Clinical Industry experience a plus).
Undergraduate or Graduate degree in related fields.
Previous experience in hands-on software development/code writing
Experience working in an enterprise environment
Experience in Pharmaceutical industry in deploying and supporting custom software
Deep understanding of Clinical Research
Proven record in leading team of technical developers in the delivery of custom software
Experience in developing service offerings in a technical environment to meet needs of customers
Demonstrate a strong technical knowledge base and understanding with ability to influence others to drive technical enhancements in software development
Ability to technically challenge and question proposed solutions to help drive the optimal approach to complex technical issues whilst understanding the needs of the customer
Experience of growing a technical team to drive them to the next level and ensure continuous value being delivered.
Ability to communicate vision (excellent written and verbal communication skills) and direction to a technical team and provide framework for personal development within the team
Experience in managing managers who are overseeing day to day delivery
Proven consulting and engagement management skills
Ability to learn and understand new technologies and technical issues quickly
Understanding of customer satisfaction and need to drive timelines and ensure quality whilst driving continuous improvement
Strong knowledge and experience in project management and customer management methodologies
Technically savvy. Able to understand modern complex technical environments.
Ability to become a ‘super-user’ of Medidata’s products.
Experience managing customer contacts at VP level and above
Expert in MS office software.
Technical Communication: Ability to create and present reports for distribution to a wider audience of individual contributors, line management and executive management
Willingness to travel 50+% - inclusive of potential trips to India.
