Your Mission: 

Medidata is looking for an experienced Senior Director, Engineering to lead our growing engineering teams as they design, implement, deploy and operate our services that enable clinical trial applications and data analytics.  The person selected will be central to building the engineering teams, the infrastructure, the microservices and the software that runs the world's most used platform for clinical development. The products and services developed and maintained by this engineering group are primarily built with Ruby on Rails and on Amazon Web Services.

Your Competencies:

  • Responsible for the technical analysis, design, evolution, delivery, stability, performance and scalability of our core services

  • Execute on aggressive product delivery timelines across multiple parts of Medidata

  • SOA-based platform to make our clients more effective in running their clinical trials

  • Ensure that SOPs and software development best practices are followed

  • Oversee technical investment, strategically, making sure that the teams are placing technical bets in the right place

  • Grow the organization through effective hiring, coaching and development of globally distributed team members.  Provide clear, consistent leadership, management and mentoring for direct reports and the broader technology organization. Inspire, empower and motivate the organization, leading by influence and personal example

  • Technical leader with demonstrable decision-making abilities:

    • You are able to synthesize large quantities of information quickly, identify what’s urgent and/or important, and correctly choose what needs to be shared up and down and when

    • You are able to take conflicting perspectives and missing information and make quick decisions that demonstrate exceptional judgement. You are expected to be the decision maker on next steps in high criticality production situations

    • You have good intuition but seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm your beliefs

    • You have strong judgement and through extensive engineering experience have developed good instincts for asking informed, guiding questions and suggesting next steps

    • You have the ability to roll up your sleeves and get involved in the technical details when needed - the ideal candidate is expected to have the technical skills required to move things forward during critical production issue and guide the architects and engineers to consensus when they are stuck

    • Technical experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs is desired

  • Culture setter and role model:

    • You have experience managing managers and understand the difference between managing leaders and managing ICs

    • You are able to debug engineering teams - identify what is holding them back from top performance and take action

    • Proven leadership in driving agile software engineering teams that are self-organizing is required

    • Proven cross functional collaboration with groups like software quality, project management, and product management to create positive change within the organization is required

Your Education & Experience:

  • Technical Bachelor’s degree required; Computer Science or equivalent degree preferred
  • Hands on experience in the software engineering discipline is required
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience
  • Experience building highly scalable AWS cloud-based services required, Ruby on Rails preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
